Tutorial For Re-doing Brakes On Silverado?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I am in desperate need of new front brakes on my 2005 Silverado. I will be doing them myself, with the assistance of two of my roommates - anyone know if there are any online tutorials to help us along? I am by no means a mechanic, but two of my buddies claim to know what they are doing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

txab, new to the board, had an issue with driving in 4 wheel hi, the gm forum helped me tremendously! and am getting ready to replace my pads and resurface my rotors, thank u for the tutorial.

What worries me is that i have a 2006 Z71 reg cab 1/2 ton 4x4 w/ about 45k on the brake pads,is this normal?

Thanks!

txab, sorry, new here, called napa, they will resurface both rotors for $26, could you possibly recommend a pad, they start out at about 30 dollars and go into the hundreds.

is it normal for the oem pads to go to 45k? just wondering :seeya:

Thank you.

I use Wagner ThermoQuiet pads. Don't know what you can get locally, but the rule of thumb I use with brakes is: You get what you pay for. Sure you can get a $30 set of pads; but, would you trust your life to a $30 set of pads?

I just changed the front and rear brakes on my truck last thursday. spent about 35 bucks per set for OEM replacement brakes. if i had the money i would get the top of the line but with that its kind of redundant as far as performance goes unless you upgrade your rotors to a hi performance rotor. But yes as he said you get what you pay for. Oh, I know a tutorial was posted earlier but you can also do a search on Youtube for "brake pad installation" or somethign along those lines. I hadn't changed brakes in a while so wanted to make sure i remembered everything. there are several videos on there that a mechanic does on a silverado from how to bleed brakes, pad removal and install, to caliper piston compression.
