Dented Chrome Endcap

I backed into a farm implement with my wife's '09 Silverado Crew. What got dented was the right chrome end cap of the bumper, the center step plate plastic and maybe the right rear bumper brace.

 

Chevy wants $560 to replace those three parts as they are charging full MSRP for the parts. Through GMDirect, I can get the parts for $280 with shipping. Is it that hard of a repair? seems like the center cap pulls off with trim tools, I'm not sure if I would need to remove the right bumper top cap, and then the chrome end cap just bolts down to the brace.

 

Anyone ever do this repair to rate how difficult? Anyone have the service page for that to look to see if I'm correct in the steps to remove?

If you want to see how the bumper components go together, the best way is to go to your GM dealer parts department and ask for an exploded view diagram of the bumper. They should print you one for free.

No, the brush hog laughed at the attempt to crush it though I think I did scratch a little yellow paint off.

 

From the GM Direct website, it has the parts break down and diagram. I got two quotes today, one from Chevy that included a brace that wasn't even touched ($560). The other quote was from a collision center, and the chick quoted the end cap and the bumper underneath and never quoted the broken plastic center ($680).

 

I'm calling GM Parts Direct tomorrow and ordering the two pieces I need. I just wanted to see if anyone else had gone through it before.

Pulling the old bumper and rebuilding it can be done with normal hand tools in your driveway. If I was spending that much money I might be tempted to look for an aftermarket bumper that was not made of reinforced tinfoil.

tell me about it. Rear bumpers on Chevys/GMCs seem to collapse at low speeds. average payout on the claims that I handle are right about $1200 (bumper usually kills the rear quarters or tailgate) and these are low speed accidents (less than 10 MPH). Makes me feel good when I back into a pole or wall, get out and say "Huh, cant tell where I hit it". If I recall correctly, there are some type of rivets on the bumper...may want to check to be sure...

search Buffalo craigslist.... A guy is selling them (chrome ends) on there for $50.00, he may have the other parts as well..... I got one for my truck from him already. Used, but in perfect condition.

I had to replace one of the end pieces on my rear bumper. From the factory, it is riveted in. Once I drilled out the rivets, the end piece came off. To put the new piece on, I went to the hardware store and bought some nuts, bolts and lock washers. Once you take off the the rubber/plastic pieces, it is easy to see how it is attached. kad2112... thanks also, I'll drop you an email if I have an issue. I see some bolts holding down the chrome pieces so maybe they changed with the 09s.
