Revving The Engine?

Is revving the engine up to 5K RPM bad for the motor? Does it stress the engine or can it cause anything bad to happen?

Can you rev the motor to 5k not in gear ? many of the newer motors will cut out spark @ ~ 3000 rpm to avoid a neutral over rev.

I know my mercury outboard cuts it out ~ 1500 rpm and sets a neutral over rev fault in the computer. An old car I had (93 mercury) would cut out spark ~ 3000 rpm to keep the engine from revving higher in neutral. Several GM products I have owned over the years would do the same.

I don't think it's a good thing, but every once in a while for non-extended times won't hurt anything.

revving an unloaded motor is bad. revving a motor in drive to race a ford is great sport and ok if not done too much.

It's not gonna hurt it. I wouldn't make it a habit, but once in a while won't hurt a thing.

Don't do it before the engine is fully warmed up. It won't hurt every now and again. It has a rev limiter on it. I don't remember when it kicks in but its over 5000 RPM.

When my 2007 V-Max was stock it would only rev up to 4000rpms in Neutral it wouldn't go over that.

Man O man where are the balls in this thread? Who hasn't revved their V8 to the point of screaming every once in a while? Damn... I've never seen anybody hurt one, and I've seen a bunch of them given hell.

I guess I better log off and get over to the drag strip and warn the boys there...

WOW

LOL I was hoping someone would say it! COME ON GUYS, I think the rev limiter bounces the RPMS somewhere between 5000 and 6000 RPMS.

I've done it a few times in park... I am a man after all.

Its not something you should do everytime you drive the vehicle though.

I seen what was left after a buddy revved up his 350......it looked like someone unloaded a machine gun into his oil pan an a handgrenade in the block...holes and shrapnel.

Only thing left useable as the pass side head, and it needed new valves.

I personally did a 6k nuetral drop once in a 76 firebird. Had a 69 428 HO engine we built in it. Only damage was a thrown alternator belt and dual black marks over 1/8 mile long......but I don't do that junk anymore.....Dad don't pay for the repairs anymore.
