Speedometer Is Broken

Recommended Posts

Last week I was driving down the road and all of the sudden my speedo read 70mph!! I was only doing 30mph tops. I got to work and turned the truck off. After restarting it, it reset itself. It has happened a couple times. Tonight it was pegged past 120mph. When I got home I tried restarting it but the speedo would only reset in 10 mph increments. After 10-12 times it's back to zero.

What could be the cause? All the other guages are working fine....for now!

The speedo stepper motor is bad. You can buy parts to replace the motor off ebay or replace the cluster. :D

there is a TSB out for this. GM extended the warranty on the clusters to 7 years 70,000 miles. see the dealer. i got mine replaced for that reason

yes, fairly easy. look for an auction on ebay for them. usually the seller will be able to provide you with some guidance

Just had this taken care of in my 2005 Sierra. Same exact thing was going on. It is those motors. On the tsb you are covered up to the 70k miles completly. If you have between 70k and 80k the part is covered but you have to pay for labor. I had 75k miles so I got the part but had to pay labor. Labor was for the instal was only like $30. If it is covered it is a lot easier to go this rout instead of replacing the motor yourself.

now i could be 100% wrong but when your speedo sticks/pegs at a hugher number im pretty sure its pilein' on the mileage on the odometer according to what your speedo says, so if yours was pegged at 100 MPH for 30 min, you put 50 miles on the odometer even if you only drive 7 miles. Or i could be wrong...lol

NO no more mileage tacked on to it. Its best to replace the whole cluster. Gonna cost you about 250-300 but ive seen mutiple guages go out, such as tach and temp guage and so forth. Youll need to pull the old cluster out and take the part number off of it and have your local chevy parts order and new cluster( tell them to make sure ISS programs the mileage and hours). Once it comes in give them your old one and install the new one, some have to be programmed and some dont, if your does the servoce dept can do it for you. Just my 2 cents

would this also cause a speedometer needle to decrease in speed but not increase in speed? for example, last winter/spring i would be cruising at say 70, slow down to 60, and then back up to 70- but the speedo wouldnt go past 60. and if i decreased in speed again, speedo would decrease the correct amount, but wouldnt increase. this would happen until the needle couldnt decrease any further (below 0). also, sometimes the needle "sticks". instead of a smooth increase it will jump in like 3 mph increments.

it has since pretty much corrected itself. just curious.

well i was pulled over on base and he asked if i knew the limit i told him 25. he asked if i knew my speed and the truck was off. i laughed and said 120. the needle was still sitting at 120.

Seems to me it's time to put a 0-60 vid on youtube.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
