1500 Vs. 2500

I have my eye on a 2007 Yukon XL SLT 2500 with the 6.0 and 4l80e tranny. What are the drswbacks to the 2500 over the 1500, if any? I assume the MPG's will be lower and the ride a little stiffer. Anything else I need to be aware of?

I have a 2010 Yukon XL 2500 4x4. It will ride a little rougher than a 1500, but it's not nearly as rough as I expected. I have the 6 speed transmission whereas you will have the 4. I don't know if it really makes much of a difference. I regularly average 12 in the city and 17 on the highway. That's not driving like grandma, but it's also not romping on it either.

 

I highly highly recommend the 2500 Yukon. If you find a good 2500, get it.

 

I ordered mine because there were only 2 new 2500's on dealers lots in all of Washington. I also wanted every option so had to order it that way.

My 03 2500 with a 8.1 gets 12 around town and 14 on hwy on average.

I can live with 12 around town and 14-15 hwy, but 11 on the highway would be a deal breaker for me. I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow.

The more I think about this, the more reservations I have. It does have 3.73's instead of 4.10's so that would help fuel economy somewhat, although I'm sure it's probably negligible.

 

The bottom line is that I don't pull much and this will be primarily the wife's ride...so mostly driving around town. I just don't know if I can justify the poor fuel economy.

We know the GM at the dealership so I'm pretty sure we can get a nice deal on it. I just don't want to buy it because it's a good deal and stop at every gas station I see and regret buying it. We're going out this afternoon to look at it and drive it, so we'll see. I'm just trying to make the "smart" decision here.

jtupper, I have an 07 XL 2500 with the 4L80 with a 3.73 rear. Most of our Highways in MI are flat so if you in a hilly area you could expect a bit less. Anyway @ 80MPH AC off conditions I run 14.8 to 15.1 MPG, Mixed city driving yields about 13. You can expect a decrease in fuel economy when the gas stations switch over to winter mix, as well as summer driving with A/C. Either way the 2500 is a beast. You probably already know this but the front suspension design is substantially different. The major difference you will see with the six speed is in the acceleration, as the final drive ratio is pretty close to the 4 speed.

I went out yesterday and drove the 2500. I immediately noticed how much stiffer and rigid it was compared to my wife's current 03 Tahoe. I wondered if the 1500 was also stiffer since it's a new campaign (GMT800 vs. GMT900). I wasn't very impressed with the 6.0 either. To me it almost seemed a little sluggish. I was expecting more power compared to my current 5.3, but I figured since it was powering a bigger and much heavier rig, some of that extra power was lost in translation. I think a 6-spedd would have helped. We test drove a 1500 for comparison and what a difference. It was much more comparable to the current Tahoe's ride, although the 5.3 in the bigger rig was also a little more sluggish. It also had the 4-speed tranny.

 

As for looks, the 2500 wheels and those big ass mirrors screamed work truck to me. The interior, on the other hand, was awesome. It had the black leather, 4 captains chairs, DVD, remote start, sunroof... It was exactly what we were looking for as far as the trim level, but again, just couldn't get past the ride and work truckish look.

 

In the end, I just couldn't pull the trigger. I decided to wait and think about it. I figured if I wasn't itching to pull the trigger now, I would be probably less inclined to do so after 24 hrs. Sure enough, this morning I'm really glad I did. In the end, the 2500 just doesn't suit our needs. I definitely think I'm going to hold out for a 6-speed after driving that new 1500.
