Does gm recommend changing p/s fluid? i was thinking about having it flushed and was told by the dealer that it is not recommended by gm, so i was thinking about sucking as much of it as i can from the pump with a turkey baster or syphon then refilling with some gm p/s fluid i have in the garage...on another note, the service guy sold me cold weather p/s fluid? i think its green and from what i can tell my factory fluid is or was red, will it cause any harm to mix the old and new green shit together?..keep in mind i have the factory fluid still in the truck, 04 120k

I can't imagine they aren't compatable. I did mine with a turkey baster. I used Redline synthetic.

Don't forget to wash it before the wife finds it on Thursday!

I had high hopes of flushing mine out last weekend. After looking at the cooler lines and such I said screw it and am doin the turkey baster method. Im using amsoil ps fluid and after about 2 qts it feels good, certainly not any worse than it was.

well i don't want to baste out a large amount of the factory crud and put this cold weather p/s fluid in and end up damaging something

"cold weather fluid" sounds like snake oil to me. Does this mean you have to change it back to summer fluid in 6 months? I'm a mech. In Ontario, and have never heard of this stuff. Nor do I see a need for it. Just make sure whatever fluid you use meats the OEM specs and your good to go.... And by the way the turkey baster is a cheaper version of what most shops use to do a P.s. flush....

Good luck.

Wondering why you think you need cold weather fluid after all this time? I'd replace it with a regular synthetic PS fluid and be done with it. Don't want no green stuff in my PS fluid.

i asked for a quart of p/s fluid at the dealer, and i got "cold climate power steering fluid" all i know is its green, says it is anti-foaming until negative some temp..its GM brand so somebody must know what it is

GM Cold Climate fluid is the real deal. It is a semi-synthetic fluid that works great in colder climates or for those who just want a little more protection.

You can flush the system a couple of different ways....

1. Pull the return line off and put it in an old gallon container.

Start the engine and run the new fluid through until it come out in your drain container.

Cap everything back up and top off the fluid until it is at the correct level.

2. Pull the old fluid out of the reservior and top it off with new.

Run the vehicle for an hour or two and repeat the process until the fluid is completely new.

GM does not have a service interval for the power steering fluid but that doesn't mean that you can't change it

if you'd like. I recommend it to my customers when the old fluid starts to turn dark. Usually about once over other

year or 30,000 miles.

is it ok to mix with the old factory fluid? i put a dribble of the green stuff in to top off my p/s...heres my proposed way of doing it, let me know if its ok to do..

suck as much of the fluid out of the pump resevoir with a syphon or turkey baster, then topping it off with the green stuff. My factory fluid looks brown and shitty, its got over 100k on it and i just don't want to put a large amount of new fluid in and ruin something. also how much fluid will the pump hold? i have one quart on hand collecting dust in the garage..is this a good plan? i don't feel too comfortable taking lines and shit off

You can get just a hair over a pint out using the baster method. It takes about 3 pints to completely change out the fluid using this method

now in your opinion would it be worth doing? i have about two days before the seige of snow will begin, so i will have time to do the turkey baster method maybe once before then as i do not have an indoor place to pull my truck into, to do work

Yes, I would do a change of PS fluid. I have already done it on mine last year.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
