I'm trying to keep my truck looking clean. Mounting the radio is no big deal really. 2m Yaeseu. For the Antenna: I don't use my radio all the time and usually stow away the antanna. I would like to keep stuff off the paint.

 

Any suggestions?

I have an old window mount antenna that I picked up from Radio Shack some years ago. The bracket fits over the top edge of the window and you simply wind up the window back into the channel. On my ex cab rear windows, the bracket easlly fits into the upper channel in the window frame. It comes with a 20' cable but it easily rolls up and I run the cable along the rear floor and along the console up to the radio.

 

RS also has a window mount antenna that has the mast on a pad that glues to the outside of the glass and the inside cable part glues to the other side. So there is no hard connection between the two pieces; for short xmit ranges (like being in a car caravan) it works, but anything more than a mile or two is a crapshoot.

 

My radio is a Cobra 75 WX ST handheld so it doesn't need to have a permanent mount. The power box and antenna connection is half the size of a cigarette pack and I use one of the power ports to get 12v power. I can have the whole system installed and operating within 10 minutes.

You will see decreased performance if you use a window mount. I don't recommend a window mount.

 

You could do like a magnet mount on the roof and remove it when you aren't going to use it.

 

Or if you decided to get a toolbox or something you could mount the antenna on the toolbox just make sure to run a ground strap from the toolbox to the frame.

 

I personally recommend to drill the hole in the roof and use an NMO mount.

 

Yes it might hurt for alittle bit but it looks very professional and the pain will go away when you see just how good you will transmit and receive.

Yeah, Through glass antenna are crap for me, but the clip in window mount sounds like it would be a good idea. I can't find one for a p-259. Mag mounts are really hard on paint jobs. especially if you are taking them on and off all the time. The roof mount would be great but i have to take it down most of the time and I'm afraid tree limbs might tear it out of the roof. IDK if i could do it if i wanted to.

 

What I have is a Comet Lip mount made for trunks and hoods. I'm gonna put it on the indide edge of the bed rail and try to run the coax hidden down through the stakepost and up through the vents in the back of the cab. We'll see how it goes.

 

Thanks for the ideas. May end up going another direction anyways.

they make some pretty cool center console things for CB'c and whatnot in the GMT900's or you could just get a small CB like i did and screw it into the lower part of the dash.. which is as clean as i could get it....

My Ham is a little bigger than that, I'm gonna put it on the hump. The lip mount didn't work out so i am sending it back, minus a 15% restocking fee and shipping. Bolting a piece metaln angle inside the bedrail and using my old mag mount. Out 25 bucks and back to the same thing that has worked before.

Do you have a center console and does your rig have a remote head? My Kenwood rigs had remote heads and I mounted the radio inside the center console, and the remote head right above the factory radio. As for the Antenna, I did a perm mount directly above the overhead light in the headliner, take out the overhead light, drill your hole straight up, and it's pretty much dead on in the center of the roof. Ran the coax down the side piller (seatbelt) under the carpet and up into the center console.

 

Since I am selling My truck, I removed it all but I can still take a few photos of the areas I mounted and such if you would like. It looked great!

No remote head here. Those are pretty nice though. I would like to see it on the dash. Mine is a yeasu 2400 or 2800. I'm not sure right now...doesnt really matter. The permanant mount would be nice and great idea using the overhead light for access and alignment. My antenna is down most of the time. Garage at the house and parking garage at work. With my old truck I had the mag mount ran through the door and on the roof. I just lay it across the back window when not in use. I think i am going to do the same thing, just inside the bed rail. Save a big rusted hole in the roof.

I've got mine mounted on my dash above my radio with a magnetic 36" wilson antenna. Works great in the mountains. I like mine on my dash but my next place is gonnna be to modify my cd case pocket to fit my cb. (the wires aren't always that messy fyi :rollin: )

Well i got everything mounted and then broke the anchor shaped bolt that tightens the battery cable. It is held tight by a hose clamp right now. Hopefully i can get a new one from the dealer or a junkyard tomorrow.

pics tomorrow. Kinda aggrevated today and it got dark. It is nothing fancy. I just mounted the radio under the dash beside the 4x4 shifter and i have a mag mount antenna that will go on a pice of angle inside the bedrail. I can then lay it down for garages, pictures and showing off.

 

Yours looks good. Clean and simple.

 

Pics? Totally different model, but I'll show off anyway.

      When I was there, most to all did not have an hour meter. They just did 5000 miles on regular vehicles and 3000 on police stuff. The modern oil change monitors should take into account engine hours, weather, etc. I don`t use the monitor on my stuff. I pull the stick, look at it, smell it, rub it between my fingers, etc. That`s my oci.   I have had many engines. Some bracket race. No problems doing things my way. I was in the mechanic business for 30 yrs or so. I still do things the old school way. Don`t care who laughs at me.   Understand, I was in the main shop. We didn`t do oil changes or tires. We had a service station for that. I don`t remember the hours they used for tractors, lawn mowers, etc. Something in my head says 250 hours.

      I don't know how far back vehicles had hour meters, be it driver accessible or diag accessible but was wondering if there was any rule of thumb your shop came up with in regards to an hour limit on engine oil regardless of the miles on the oil.    I know with construction or farm equipment its almost always based on engine hours for maintenance scheduling as no other metric really applies other than a seasonal time limit that one self imposes on items like engine oil.

      I'm not sure what to say on that mess but I will say that is an odd thing for that mechanic to speculate on as per assuming its been run out of oil a few times as the odds of that engine having instead piled up with a complete seizure would be very high if such events had actually taken place. However there is nothing saying that the oil has ever been changed although once again, what filter was on that engine as that would tell part of the story if its possible to figure out if its a factory installed filter or not. Too many items unknown and a lot of speculation, but regardless of that its one fubared mess that is mind boggling to see for a vehicle that new and its hard to imagine how it ever made it that far in life looking at the top of the engine.    His scanners, I've watched him before here and there and I'd have to say if I recall correctly that some of his scanning equipment is one or two steps up from a child's Exo Sketch 😋

      I agree. That`s a LOT of sludge for 12,000 miles. I tossed that out here since this is an OCI thread. There`s tons of people here that do not post.   I used to work on a city fleet. That includes police cars and fire trucks. Lesson is, not to only use the odo for oci. A police car has a ton of hours on the engine for the miles it shows. And, not just idling, directing traffic. They beat on these things.   Course, since it is a Kia, they were gonna use the "100,000 mile warranty" for their OCI.😉

      CLASS ACTION SUITS?  Does anyone know if there is already a class action suit for the paint - which was to have been fixed, changed in after the 2020 GM vehicles?  Does it look like this?    Just started 3 weeks ago - No help from GM as of yet - Dealer will not assist in speaking with GM on my behalf. Confirmed it is the paint they use along with the way the put it on that causes it to fail.  Clearly a Manufacturer's Defect.
