"auto" 4wd

Ok, so we had the first major snowfall on the west coast of BC... and first time I've had my truck in the snow. My former 96 Chev had a floor shift, so you always KNEW when it was in gear (cause you had to put it there).

The new ride has the selector with "Auto" which from my understanding, when the truck senses rear tire spin it engages the front wheels automatically? That said, is there supposed to be an indicator saying that 4WD kicked in? I know there no light on the dash (saw that thread earlier) but even the small indicator light on the dial never changes (unless you actually turn the control knob to 4WD)

From what I can tell... the front wheels kick in, but anyway to know for sure and when?

Yeah, thats the poopy part. You never really do know except for the pin hole size light on the knob. It's one of the dumbest things GM did to save cash. That and no hood light.

so when you have your truck in auto it doesn't light up on the dial? Mine does it doesn't light up when it engages 4wd but the light stays on to tell me I selected auto.

if you have traction its on, lol.

If you're driving on snow just put it in 4wd High, if the roads have been plowed and its not icy put it in auto

Sorry, yes the light on "Auto" is on, but the light doesn't change by itself when it engages 4WD. Just thought maybe it would. I've always had manual-shift 4WD. All this fancy technology is new to me LOL

if you're driving in snow, put the pedal to the mat

if the ass end of your truck goes sideways, it isn't working

Unfortunately, there is no indicator that says your truck has kicked into four-wheel drive if you are in auto. Most of the time you can actually feel and hear when it locks in.

Yeah that's ultimately what it came down to. I was impressed with the handling though... gunned it a couple times on a unoccupied road just to see how the truck handled... went right on straight, very little sideways motion! These 'advanced' vehicles.. computer controlled traction, Stabilitrak, etc.... I was skeptical lol

Haha, these trucks are big computers. Try going fast around gravel curve; your truck will do all sorts of things to keep you on the road. I did not attempt this with my truck... my buddy did in his 07 Silverado!

Since we had our little snow last week, I've been using the AUTO4 quite a bit due to broken nature of the snow on the road. Snow, icy patch, clear and dry, snow, dry, ice, dry, ice, snow, etc. The nice thing about the AUTO4 is it is so seamless you can't tell when it's engaged. (Or maybe I just don't slip my rears enough to make it kick in.) I would imagine that a tell-tale light would just drive you nuts blinking ON and OFF.

For anyone who wants to confuse their stabilitrac and traction control just buy a set of cooper zeon ltz's, I put them on the truck and after the first snowfall I had to go get my gf to drive while I watched to see if the front wheels were spinning.

with these tires the truck gets so little traction in the snow all the "drive properly for you" features are confused and take forever to kick in. I have mixed feelings on the results

I have the stock tires on my car and I think that the traction features are confused in general. My Pontiac G6 had traction control and you could tell as soon as it spun the ABS kicked on. On this thing the locking rear diff doesn't seem to lock very often even when slipping and the traction control doesn't seem to come on when slipping either. So far its just been slipping in the mud though the real test will be when the snow falls

    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
