i know it mentions in the owner's manuel that the truck will not go into overdrive if the trans is not heated up, my question is why? today it was 19 all day and i let my truck idle all the way to 210 and yet it still stayed out of 4th for a good mile or so...

Engine temps don't match the transmission temps. Usually, the tranny is alot cooler than the engine.

+1

Trans temps lag engine temps. In the mornings I can be driving with engine temp at 205 and my trans temp gauge hasn't even moved off 100.

You're fine.

why stay out of overdrive though? will some sort of damage occur by it going into 4th cold?

No need for the extra load on the cold trans. Trans works best after brought up to temp.
