Abs Diagnosing

I have a 2000 Sierra, and upon repairing the dash cluster I discovered the previous owner had put black-tape over the ABS light - cause it stays on... So here is my question, can I retrieve diagnostic codes from the ABS system without a scan tool. I had a 92 YUKON and it was a matter of jumpnig pins on the ALDL. Is that possible for the 2000 GMC?

No, you need a very advanced reader to pull ABS codes, not just any obd-II reader either. The old jumping the data line to the ground on the aldl will not work on these.

I would not worry about it, I deleted the ABS on my truck for that reason, plus I don't need it anyway.

The ABS controller is probably screwed. Huge known issue with the units in those generatation of trucks. There is a chip that drives the ABS pump that blows up, and you lose your ABS, and get the light on the dash.

 

If you google, there is a place you can send it to, and they will fix it, and send it back (price was decent). Unfortunately, if you're truck is like mine, good luck getting it unhooked and out (it'll be rusted in there).

 

So, you just accept you have no abs (which in the 2000's was horrible and worked like crap), and move on.

Check to see if the ABS fuses have been removed. If they have, plug them back in and see if the pump motor runs continuously. If it does, you need an new EBCM or the computer that runs the abs system. They can be tough to get off, sometimes, and they aren't cheap to replace/repair but I've found few situtations, and I don't know of anybody

with a robotic leg capable of, that abs doesn't stop the vehicle better than normal braking. And lets remember, abs is not only there to stop you better but it's main function is to allow you to maintain directional control of the vehicle under emergency braking situations. Don't care who ya are but ya can't do that with the front tires locked up with no abs.
