I have a2008 GMC Sierra Denali with exhaust and intake. I am going to get it tuned shortly and have been reading about different cams. This truck is my daily driver and want to keep it reliable but would also like to be a street sleeper. DOn't know much about cams or what I should be exactly looking for. Any links or advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, what would be the priuce range to buy a install one of these cams and would I need to make any other changes. Has anyone put a different cam in there vehicle and what types of experiences have you had.

cams can be anything from mild to wild...

to get a little more umph from a cam while still being a sleeper is possible.

a properly tuned cam, even a moderate one, will not hurt reliability.

what matters most is what do you use the vehicle for and what do you expect from it. Don't think you are gonna be running 10 second 1/4 mile one night then towing the family yacht to the marina the next day - there is tradeoffs.

Most performance cams will be intended for making high rpm horsepower.

You can contact places such as Thunder Racing or Cam Motion and talk to a sales rep about what you have, how you use it and what you expect from it and they may be able to help assist you with picking something suited to your needs.

In addition to changing the cam normally the lift of the cam will exceed the ratings of the stock valve springs, so those are normally replaced with an aftermarket spring set. The price to change a cam can vary depending on the mechanic's knowledge and experience. You would be best to search for a forum for local automotive enthusiast to get a shop recommendation for someone that is familiar with modern GM motors.

Also now that depending on what you are looking for a higher stalling torque converter to match the cam may be the route to get best results, it's just one more factor.

Truck has 3.42 gears with a set of 22 inch rims. I use the truck for normal everyday use and occassionaly pull a two place enclosed snowmobile trailer in the winter. I'm realistic and know this is not going to be a 10 second car.

Wow, changing out internal engine parts in a $40K+ truck with a 100,000 warranty just doesn't seem smart. I know these engines can handle anything, but why risk voiding a good warranty?

Gentlemen,

I was forced to replace the cam in a heavy work truck 454 some years back. I was offered a number of grinds but I tried a high mileage , economy cam.

This thing was incredible. The torque curve now peaked at 4000 rpm and the thing ran like a diesel with loads of low rpm power. Mileage increased too. I know the peak hp dropped but it was not apparent at all. The low end torque gain was real.

Really, how much time do you spend at 6500 rpm? Near zero unless you race. At least you should think about this, I know what i would do in a heartbeat.

I just bought a Comp VVT Cam for my 09 Denali. It is part number 156-402-13. It is 218in 232ex on a 114lsa. With the VVT it is supposed to have no loss down low. But, a 60hp gain up top. I will be installing it with Comp 918 springs and the phaser limiter. It will not be installed for a few months though.

given the size and weight of truck, i would contact someone like ed curtis at flowtech. he specs custom cams exactly for the application.

in general though, bigger cams make more horsepower up top, but the tradeoff is less low end grunt. that is something you dont want in a daily driven truck. obviously there are exceptions to the rule, but it's a start.

on top of that, you'll need new valve springs and everything that goes along with them, some kind of torque converter speced for the cam and vehicle combo, and some sort of free flowing exhaust with headers. ok, the exhaust isn't really neccessary, but you'll just be chocking the cam.

there's alot more involved in changing a cam than just pulling out the old cam and putting in a new one.
