12v Accessory Wire

Hey there everybody,

 

I am upgrading my truck radio to the OEM DVD/NAV. It requires an additional 12v accessory lead. I started to run a wire from the fuse box under the hood through the firewall, and found a 12v trailer brake wire that was installed by a dealership a few years ago.... is there any reason I can't splice into that right behind the brake control under the steering wheel?? Would I have the RAP feature on that one?? If you don't think it's a good idea, I have a sunroof fuse, but no sunroof... I know that those were on the RAP fuse list.... could I use that one?? It's a 30amp...

 

Other suggestions are appreciated! This site is awesome!

What about the "add a fuse" kits?? Maybe another option if the trailer brake wire won't work??

Search Retained Accessory Power and you will find a way to tap into the BCM.

 

There is also a black box under the dash that is used for upfitters. You can tap into this using a relay and you will also get RAP.

 

The trailer brake wire provides constant power at all times.

Okay guys,

 

I've added the DVD/NAV and have tapped in to a fuse (non-RAP) until my relay's arrive. All is working fine, EXCEPT, I've lost the little sounds such as blinker clicks and the door lock alert, etc...

 

Any common reasons that I don't know about? I haven't dealt with the new car audio systems, so maybe they were accomplished through the original unit?? Seems odd that they wouldn't go through the new unit, since it is a GMC head unit also...

 

All thoughts appreciated!!

Followed the advise of the link you sent me, and it worked like a charm!! Thanks a bunch! I figured out the little sounds thing too.... NOT an OEM unit, but a OEM replacement unit.... looks almost identical though... but I would guess that's why I've lost those features....

yeah, you gotta have the rds stuff i think it is in the head unit for it to work, the radio actually communicates with computer in some ways so once you replace it some functionality like the door chimes are lost.

If you want those chimes back then look into a radio module since you technically have an aftermarket radio, would also have taken care of the Acc power.
