Tires For Towing

Is there any difference between LT and P tires for towing?

I pull a BassTracker in the summer. The truck still has the OEM tires which are P tires. When I replace them is there any advantage to going with LT?

Lt Has more side wall plies and you have to run higher tire pressure in them which gives it a harder ride but better for towing heavy loads..Pulling a bass tracker I would just stay with the p series.

On my '02 YukonXL I had, it originally came with P-rated tires. Towed with it for almost 5 years before switching to T-rated tires.

World of difference in my opinion....towed so much better with the T-rated (truck tires), must less sideways sway.

And it really didn't change the ride much.

P stands for Passenger Car

LY stands for Light Truck

The oem's put P tires on 1500 trucks and suv because they ride better, get better fuel economy and of course are cheaper

Agreed... world of difference between a "P" rated tire and an "LT" rated tire as far as towing goes.

If your towing alot, I'd highly suggest an LT tire. :uhoh:

I switched to LT tires for towing a camper and noticed a big change. Really helped with trailer sway in high winds and just adds piece of mind as p rated tires aren't really made for frequent towing. MPG did go down about .5-1 but isn't a big deal in a truck, you didn't buy it for the mileage anyway. I use 55-60lbs in when towing and lower it to 40-45 in normal driving and didn't notice too much change in ride, a little stiffer but no big deal. I probably wouldn't bother if you don't tow frequently or if you tow under 5000lbs, it wouldn't be worth the extra cost.
