i ordered the GM remote start for truck. i would have thought a $40,000 plus truck would have come stock with that option. Dealer said they did not come that way on many 2500's. Since i park outside, i need one. I hate going out in the cold morning just to start my truck, lol

My dealer couldn't do a remote start on my 2011 on Wednesday they said GM won't release the codes due to some software bug in the 2011's. I haven't heard anything from them yet so you might want to check before your appointment so you don't waste half a day like I did....

not to hijack but what does it take to put remote start on a 01

thanks

If you bring it to a autmotive audio shop and depending on what you want, the cost should be around $300. That includes an remote starter and alarm. As far as install, I never installed one before. But the remote starter is a useful option imo. Especially if you have a vehicle that hardly gets used, but need to start it every once in awhile. I can sit on my recliner and start my vehicle without getting up.

MIKE...........Be warned that SOME aftermarket remote starters need

specific add-on modules to work on most GM models.

Be sure to get a GM specific brand to avoid problems.

yea, i am getting the factory system, so hopefully there will be no issues. i had to go aftermarket on my 09 WT, but it was about the same price at the dealer.

I would be vary wary of aftermarket remote starts. They can cause many problems if not done properly. I would avoid anything other than OE, but that's me.

What are your concerns about aftermarket systems?

Posted

The concerns are the cheapie/certain auto starts are not compatible with GM and other brand vehicles. Some are just cobbled in or with out the proper installation modules and cause issues down the road !

Certain units like DEI and some others are GM specific and are plug n play and require no modules.

I think the factory units are the best even tho they do have limitations like run times but IF you have a issue the GM dealer/warranty can repair it with no excuses like "Gee its aftermarket.........can't help ya"!

I have been there and done that with a brand X auto start unit on my 01 GM truck!

Thus my warnings.........................

I always was weary when I came across advertisements for remote starters for $49.99. You get what you pay for. My warranty would cover it, if a problem occurred as a result of the remote starter, but I have a good one, so I am not concerned. Actually had a problem with the alarm and Viper gave me a brain new brain module no questions asked after it was 2 -3 years old. I had an Ungo in my F250 which is made by Clarion, it worked well, but the viper one I currently have now has a farther range to it. I can start my vehicle from inside my house and start the car in the other building which is 150 ft away. Also don't have any problems turning it off if I want to via remote. Furthest range it started my vehicle was over 600 ft which I thought was impressive considering I live in a rural thick wooded area. There is an add on for my Viper where I can use an internet connection to start the vehicle from anywhere in the world, but it was like $150 more I think for it.
