What Truck To Buy?

Recommended Posts

In a month or two, I'll be purchasing a new HD diesel truck. My current F-350 has approx 200K on the odometer, so it's time to trade her in.

I haven't owned a GM HD truck yet, but I really like the new Silverado's exterior styling. Are there any known issues with the 6.6 Duramax?

It's a toss up between the '11 Silvy or the '11 Ford with the all new 6.7.

Despite all the stupid smog crap on the truck (DEF & DPF) (Which both Ford and GM have, with Dodge only having the DPF for right now) the Duramax is still the best diesel out there hands down. You can't beat the Duramax/Allison combo.

I would strongly avoid the Ford for the first few years to allow them time to work out the flaws of their new Diesel (which is no longer called a PowerStroke) so ideally, your best off doing a comparison between the Dodge and the Chevy. I too like the front end look/grunt that the Silverado has.

With regards to the Dodge/Cummins- It's not as powerful and does not have as much torque as Ford and Chevy, but as many on here will point out, the Cummins has been around a long time just like the Duramax. It's just everything else built AROUND the Cummins that you may want to worry about

Well when you read stuff like this about it.

The beefy Allison H.D. 6-speed automatic transmission (same brand as in M1 Abrams Military Tank)

It just makes you smile if your driving the new 3500hd.

If you want a real truck that is capable of… just about anything that you think a truck can do, then the GMC Sierra 1500 or 2500 is your choice. If you want to tow the neighbors house and cars at the same time, then the Sierra 3500HD with the 6.6-liter Duramax V8 is the one that will get-r-done.

Ain't that the truth. Dodge quality has always been an issue and the re-sale value of their trucks suck compared to GM and Ford.

The thing I like about Fords is the interior space. I carry around tons of stuff, so it's a must. My buddy has a 1500 new body Chevrolet, and man was that thing cramped! I'm guessing GM uses the same cabin for their 1500 and 2500/3500 trucks?

And this is my current rig (not mine, but is identical):

They last forever, but I don't know if that's considered an issue.

Inside the current diesel related magazines is GM's newest ad campaign and it shows a pink page with Ford's 6.7L motor in a baby crib with the test "Welcome to the world." Ford's 6.7L motor is built in Mexico and has no track record to go off from. If you look at the reason for the new motor which is Ford's fractured relationship with Navistar over warranty issues related to the PowerJoke and whose fault which problem was.......

Meanwhile, the Duramax is the same motor, refined over over time. It's not perfect, but neither was it tossed in the trash can like the PowerJoke.

As far as the rest of the truck, the Silverado is "best in class" which it should be because it's the newest design.

your on a GM truck forum buddy, did you just need more assurance to just go buy the chevy? the trucks are almost the same, just what style you like best. and the GM pulls harder. like i said i think you are just lookin for someone to tell you what you already know...

I test drove a GM Dmax crew back to back with a Ford crew,... I liked the GM better, but the rear seats in the crewcab was bigger on the ford  But I'd never be back there, so it doesn't matter much to me :D

While I would agree and probably avoid the 6.7L the first year or so soley because it is an entirely new setup, they are still calling it a Powerstoke (look here and on the door badges)

This is the biggest thing and why I always laugh when i see these types of threads. You are going to get a very biased opinion on this forum as you would on a Ford forum. Each one is going to say that "their truck" is better than the other.

I'd go drive both of them several times and make my decision that way.

The OP stated his current truck has 200,000 miles and wants something newer.... But I agree, I can't imagine his current diesel is warn out yet.
