Drove An 8.1 Today....

Saw an '05 2500HD CC on a Chevy dealer lot today. Has the 8.1/Ally in it. Had a much smoother ride than I expected.

 

Love the drivetrain and the truck. However, it is a cloth LS interior, a step down from my current 1500 trim. I can deal with the cloth, but my wife and I would greatly miss the heated and 10-way power seats. It would have been a driveway/garage queen, and used mainly for towing.

 

I think it was overpriced, and they sneered that my truck could be of any value near what I thought it was. The usual stuff. Truck has 85K in the clock, and dealer has all service records. My only reservation about the truck was no info or record of transfer case inspection or work.

it would be cool to own one of the last big blocks but the mileage would make my wallet bleed and scream rape...their is a reason why they killed it

man...my 6 litre isnt much better...the absolute best i can get 12.5 MPG and seen it as low as 7. and my tire size/speedo is dialed right in too. our older work trucks with lq4 are the same also, we a couple 8.1's too the mileage is pretty much the same dude...

just because its a 6 banger dosen't mean its going to get good mileage..the key is a good balance between the engine and weight of the vehicle...the v6 is underpowered in a fullsize and the 8.1 is overkill

Think you read that wrong. He means the 6L V8. I have one that also gets about 12 MPG at best, so I know where he is coming from.

It is a driveway/garage queen with 28.5K on the clock and mostly used for towing an enclosed car trailer or, 32' Cabin cruiser with twin 350 cu in Chevy engines. This truck "Floats like a Butterfly & Stings like a Bee"! If I want gas mileage, I drive one of my cars!

My friends 8.1L crewcab shortbed with 3.73's gets the same mileage as my 6.0L crewcab longbed with 4.10's. For how many miles I put on it a year, I should have got the 8.1.

Thats pretty good mileage. What cab/ bed do you have? Any mods?

 

Crew cab, short bed with 3.73 rear and 245-75-16 LT tires. Only mods are a good PCM tune to 89-octane, Mobile-1 and K&N intake. I failed to mention, if I drive unloaded with cruise @ 60 mph hwy, (no stop & go) it has averaged 16.5 mpg.

6 litre V8 not v6...lol...the 8.1 and 6 litre are the same for MPG...
