1999 Sierra Transmission

I have a 99 Gmc Sierra 1500 with the 5.3L. I went to back up the other day and i have no reverse, it sometimes will move like 2 inches but usually wont move at all, it will just rev up like being in neutral. I have all the other gears except for reverse. I was wondering if I can still drive it or will that make it worse and also what could be the problem. Do i have to rebuild the tranny? Get a new one? Just put new reverse clutches in it? Any suggestions will be great. thanks

... if lack of REVERSE is the only issue, then you may not need a total rebuild ... this can be caused by fluid leak in the reverse apply circuit, or also from a worn boost valve ...

on the other hand .. it could be serious... could be worn out LO-Reverse clutches ... and/or cracked sunshell...

take it to someone who can sort out any trouble codes and check it over for you....

if it needs a total fix.... options include

- total transmission and torque converter rebuild with some basic upgrade parts (if you can find a local shop you trust).... or

- GM sells and installs (through dealers) rebuilt transmissions with a 3yr warranty ... this is good value if you can't a local rebuilder

- I would not recommend looking for a transmission from a wrecker... you might end up with one just like the one you are getting rid of

These 4L60E transmissions do wear out and need rebuilding routinely ... commonly good for 130,000 to 150,000 miles ... if you have more than that on your odometer then you already got a bonus.

I am really confused now about my transmission...I went to try reverse and it works now. It works just like it did before and I dont know why it is now working. It sat for like 3-4 days before i tried it.

How many miles on the trans? Sounds like you may have had something blocking the fluid. Have you flushed it out at all? Is the fluid at it's proper level? Seems after it sat, something went back to normal or all the fluid was where it needed to be....
