has anyone done their own tranny tune up? i was thinking about doing it myself but im not sure if i should just change out the fluid (easy), or if i should go ahead and change the filter too. any advise or tips? ???

If you change the fluid out, I'd go for the filter too.  Just cheap insurance that a clogged filter doesn't do your tranny in.  The best bet is to get the tranny flushed.  This will change all of the old fluid in the tranny.  Just make sure the filter is changed out too for the flush.

I had a Goodyear dealer in the area (Craven) do a BG transmission flush at about 19,000 miles (200 silverado).

i plan to change the transmission filter myself and whatever little liquid comes out during the change at about 40,000 miles and afterwards have the Goodyear dealer do another transmission flush usng the BG products and machine.

when my truck was my brothers and we did a transmission fluid and filter change, this is wierd, it still looks brand new 7000 miles later, we didn't do a flush, so what gives? do the 700-R4's just have a lot more fluid in the pan area? he had a suction gun to remove the diff stuff(did it at the same time), don't remember if he used it or not, but there is no way that could have gotten ALL the fluid out.

Tips? its pretty simple, make sure you get good fluid and filters(thats a given), and make sure you go through all the gears a few times before you drive it. its pretty simple really. too bad they don't have a "flush-it-yourself-kit" for tansmissions, a pro flush is a royal rip-off, there is nothing to it but the machine, which dosen't do much. All you'd really have to do is detach the transmission lines and figure out a way to pump fluid through until it looked clean. You know, the above mentioned suction gun could do that very slowy in the revese way its supposed to be used. I might try that next time...
