Abs Problem

Hello, I am new to the site and could not find any info for my problem with the search link. My problem: my anti-lock light in the dash stays on after starting truck. I was told the ECBM was bad, my truck has a Kelsey Hayes model 310 box. it has 4 harness plugs on the bottom side and is mounted to a pump with 4 torx screws. I changed the top part with electrical connectors with a known good unit ( on a 1997 K1500 mine is a 1996 K1500 ) we parked them side by side and swapped the units. The unit from my truck worked on the 97, the light came on when the key was turned on and went off after starting the engine, the unit from the 97 on my truck came on when the key was turned on but like before did not go out when starting the engine, can you give me some idea where to check next?? Robert

PS: My truck is a 1996 extended cab, short box K1500 Silverado with a 5.7 V/8 Automatic tranny.post-87136-1295400987_thumb.jpg

Advice,

check the grounds and make sure they are good. A bad ground wire can cause a code to set. Also, look up the reading you should get from each ABS sensor. I do not know what they are but the sensors should create an AC voltage that you could read with a digital voltage meter. My 2000 need I think about 250 mV AC to be good. These are things you can do to pinpoint the problem before getting codes read. Also, check the wire plugs at each sensor to make sure they are not corroded and are connected. Do the same with the power wires to the ECBM and making sure the pump motor is okay. Check the following website for some help: http://www.modulemaster.com/en/services/index.php

Thank you cwendel4 for the info, my local dealer checked for codes with his reader(box) and all he said was you need a new ECBM. Didn't say anything about any certain codes. I just don't have a grand laying around to replace it if it could be something else. That was why I was looking for a second opinion. Robert

Sorry govtech4, but the mechanic at the dealership wouldn't tell me what codes were in the computer, just that the ECBM was bad and he could fix it for about a grand. Teed me off, cost me $50.00 to check it and I am still no closer to fixing it. A friend of a fishing buddy of mine says he will borrow the break-out box what ever that is and check the codes in the ABS system and give them to me but it will be about two weeks before he will be down. I guess I will have to wait on him, I refuse to spend any more money for nothing. As soon as I learn the codes I will post them. Robert

I think I will get up in the morning and pull the front wheels and take the sensors out and clean them and the socket they mate to and see if that helps. Robert

You can always try the cleaning the speed sensor and checking the grounds to the ebcm, like said in some TSB somewhere. But 9 times out of ten it's the shitty ebcm gm used in these models. Mine does it to, but I unplugged the ebcm which made the ABS light come on and not the brake one anymore, and then I took the cluster out and put tape behind the faceplate over the abs light and I've driven a long time like that and you can't tell it's not working.
