Broke Rear Seat Installing Child Seat

Recommended Posts

Went to turn my daughter's carseat around today, put my knee into it and applied some pressure... SNAP. Our rear seats are held together by brittle plastic?

Great.

Now the seatback moves back and forth about 3/4".

I'd like a pic of exactly where that piece broke off from.

You can't get behind the seatbacks in GMT900s. If you stick your hand behind the seat in this area you can feel it:

On a tangent, thanks for installing the seat properly. Many people don't do the knee thing. When I install them, it's like they are part if the car.

Was the seat using the Latch anchors? I've put my daughters in and out numerous times without problem (using knee to make sure it's tight). But Latch only uses the silver metal rings down low and the black plastic hoop near the headrests. Just trying to understand how a plastic piece behind the seat came into play. I don't doubt you, just curious.

I have put my daughters car seat in numerous times as well using the knee and cranking the thing down and have not had a problem. As much info as possible would help if there is something we need to watch out for on this. No one wants to take a chance that a car seat comes loose in case of an accident.

If you tilt the seat bottom up, you'll notice that the seat back moves up and down a little bit. That plastic piece is kind of a spacer/bushing that a metal bar slides up and down in. The plastic piece sits inside of a metal piece so I'd still call the seat safe, just has a little bit of play in it.

Here's a super accurate diagram:

I might have pulled on the seat back to give myself more leverage to push down on the carseat. Probably didn't help that it was about 0 degrees F yesterday.

Are you still in full warrenty? Take it to the dealer and say it is broken they should fix it!

Yeah I'm still within the 36k warranty. I'm sure they'll fix it no questions asked. Now to find the time to have them do it.....

I just had the seats out of my 09 to clean the interior and they are constructed differently. I wonder if they changed it because of this problem.

Mine have a metal "hook" on the seat and the round metal bar is welded to the back of the cab.

Mine's an 09 too, but I have the bushing. Maybe it was a mid year change?

Edit: Ha, I just looked at my truck again, I drew my little diagram backwards... The round bar is attached to the back of the cab, and the "Hook" is attached to the seat. Whoops!

Thanks man! $18 from gmpartsdirect. I'll probably just buy the part myself.
