I own a small remodeling company looking to up grade from my 91 1500 to a larger truck and trailer. I need a truck that will pull a 7x14 ft trailer with 2 3500lb axles (around 6000lbs loaded) with little effort. i have pulled with half ton 5.7 but it seems to be alittle rough and all those trucks were early 90s with tons of miles over 200000 on each of them. I have not forund a truck yet i would rather know what i want rather than mulling over the options. let me know your opinion no mater what.

I imagine you could find somewhere in the 2000's a 8.1 fairly cheap, that should pull it like it isn't even there.

yeah defianatley look for a 01-02 2500 with a 6.0 ... the 6.0 will safely pull your trailer and it wont be too hard to find one.

I've owned 2 of them, and if they sold one with an Allison, I'd have one today.

 

The perfect truck for my application would have a Cummins engine, GM chassis/suspension, Allison tranny, and a Ford cabin.

I agree with the 6.0L comment. They are very common and pull very well. You should be able to find a low milage one in decent shape for not to much money if your looking in the right places. My work truck is an 2007 1 ton with the 6.0L it does everything i ask it to do and more.

I had a 2000 1500 NBS with a 5.3 L, it hauled great around town and got descent mileage. The trailer was 7.5x14 with an 1100lb mower, a 600lb mower and at one point ~4.5 cuyds of wet grass in the back (came to find out this may have been over 2 tons) Although the axel seal failed that truck pulled great. I only had to drive a couple small hills occasionally and generally kept it below 35mph. It had 179,000 when I sold it but still ran so smooth.

+1 on the cummins. Check the cummins forum. Look for one with a built tranny. You can find them for under 10 no problem

I'd get a ford 5.0 direct injection or the turbo ecoboost ... everyone seems to think they're soooooo much better than chevy 5.3 and 6.0
