Confusing problem

I am pretty sure that no one has heard of this problem but my GM dealer is at a loss so I thought I would try here.

 

I have a 2500 6.0 2000 silverado with a manual transmission. After driving for about 15-20 min I will start to hear a high pitched squeal. It is hard to tell where it is coming from. It does not happen just when I have the brakes on, or just when I step on the gas, or at any certain speeds. It happens in neutral and it happens when the clutch is in. Once it happened at 5 miles a hour where I was able to have someone drive the truck so I can walk along side to pin point where the sound was coming from. Well it comes from the front of the truck but not near the breaks. It is not the sound from the antenna either.

I took it to GM a few times, after replacing the brakes they spent a couple of days listening to the sound and gave up. They told me "you still have warranty so keep driving it. When it gets worse we will fix it."

That does not give me any confidence. If they can not figure it out why do they think they can fix it later.

Can't anyone give me any advice?

If the squeal goes up and down in perportion to the gas being applied, check for excessive wear on the belt.  Maybe the fan clutch is locking solid.  In perfect working order the fan clutch only "locks" 65%.

It could also be an alternator or water pump...  it's hard to tell without really hearing it.  You should probably check your air filter and intake for restrictions too...

 

BTW, I'm not really thrilled with the answer your dealer gave you.  If he acknowledges the noise is present, then it is their responsabillity to fix it.  If they can't, then they should/will get the district rep involved.  (I hate cop-outs)

 

I would ask for a comparable vehicle to drive while yours is in the shop to get the noise repaired...

I agree.  No need it waiting for something to break completely, possibly leaving you stranded somewhere, before it's fixed.  I'd tell them you want it looked at closer.  Talk to the service manager, I've had better luck talking with the SM than any of the techs or service advisors.  

 

If they don't want to help you out, ask the SM for the phone number to GM Customer Service and tell him/her your going to call them up because your not satisfied.  Sometimes that works too, so I hear.

If I clutch my truck and have it in reverse while rolling down our driveway which is a rather steep hill it will sing a little but if I double neutral it it shuts up... I know that is normal with a stick shift...I don't know if that is what your experiencing or not...

I am not happy with the dealer's reply either but I didn't really think there was too much I could do about it. I mean if say they can't fix, wait till it gets where. Where else am I supposed to go.

Does anyone know a number I can call if I am not happy with the way a dealer treats me?

check with your manual. it should have all numbers and contacts you need. im sorry youve had so much trouble. if the gm people cant help you, there are plenty of lawyers that specialize with this kind of trouble. i once heard that a guy bought and brand new mercedes and the a/c clutch was so loud it annoyed him. the manufacturer couldnt fix it so they refunded him his money..

don't know if this might be your problem or not, but on my last truck ('92 gmc), I had a dry valve guide at around 50k that made a sound occasionally like a squealing belt or brake squeal.  The dealer handled it as a warranty repair 'cause I'd serviced it properly and the problem shouldn't have occurred at 50k miles.
