Used Bed Rail Caps

Hey guys. My dad recently had someone hit the bed of his truck. It's going in for repairs and he is thinking about telling them to just replace the bed. I'm in the market for new bedrail caps and was thinking about just gettting the ones off of his truck for free. What type of tape is on the caps and would they go on my truck without any problems since they are used? Thanks.

Any good auto supply store will have 3M double-sided molding tape. It's sticky stuff! Red protective covering on it.

Thanks for the info. What is the best way to clean the old tape off of the bed rails before I put them on? Just peel the old tape off and get the reside off with some acetone and a scraper or something?

you shouldn't have to clean it off at all when that stuff tears apart it's pretty thin we never cleaned mouldings at the body shop when we reinstalled and never had a problem

I wouldn't use the tape. Over time it breaks down, mine blew off on the highway.

I would use rivets. About 5 on each side.

My old truck was riveted on with only 3. It never came off but you could wobble it. My bud had 5 on his and it was like it was welded on.

Mine there was no residue on the rails it was all left on the truck. And that was a b*tch to get off. No acetone, no alcohol. No rubbing or picking. But I found a way to get it off in 30minutes to like new paint under it. And that was with about 10 strips of tape. How.......?

initially purchased the 3m 1/4 x 0.045 thickness ,, wasnt enough - upgraded to the 1/2 x 0.065 and seems to be doing a much better job
