2006 Yukon Denali Xl Awd - Starter Problem

Where would I find the starter relay in a 2006 Yukon Denali XL AWD 6.0L?

Also, if it's faulty, what are the side affects i.e. no starter operation at all, selenoid works but starter motor won't engage to turn engine over, etc?

When I tun the ignition, I hear a click like (and that's all) the selenoid has engaged the gear on the flywheel.

I replaced the battery and no change. I had the starter tested at PepBoys and it tested OK. I bought a starter relay because it was only $8. Starter is now out of the vehicle. Wiring look good and not corrosion.

For a bench test without a bench: I'm thinking I will hook the starter up to the electrical connections (2 cables: battery and ignition) but not bolt it into place and then try to start the vehicle to see if the selenoid engages and verify the starter motor does not turn on as I suspect it won't.

Assuming this test fails (the starter motor doesn't turn on ), I'll replace the starter relay and see if it makes a difference.

I had the identical issue you are having this weekend. (In fact, in searching for solutions, that's how I came across your post) I actually purchased a 2005 Denali XL on Saturday, and in less than 24hrs, I'm stranded.... So not a happy camper was I. (Not to mention the hastle, inconvenience and missing the first half (and show) of the Superbowl)

I will say this, symptoms for me were identical to yours. I thought I had a dead battery, as I was getting the click, but no starter gear or engagement. Just figured that I wasn't getting enough juice to it. So, I take it to Kragen, and they say the battery is a cheapo. and needed a charge, but it wasn't bad, per se. So I figure I'll just live with it, and make sure it has a good charge. I go to leave, and sure enough, dead again. So we buy a new battery. Same problem exists... OK, not the battery.

I didn't think of a relay, but just went straight to the starter. I ended up pulling the starter, in the Kragen parking lot. I took it inside, and did a side by side comparison, and even though the starter passed the test on the bench, I still went ahead and put the new one in. (I already had confirmation from the dealership that they would cover costs, just pissed about time now) As soon as the new one has been in, it's worked perfectly. It was deffinately a nice sound hearing it start up after spending two hours under the car futzing with everything.

Replace the stater, you'll be golden. ($165 at Kragen)

I took the starter into a shop that fixes such things. They said the selenoid was not passing adequate voltage to the starter motor. The starter motor seems to work (on a bench at least) but won't work under any kind of load which explains how it passed a test at my PepBoys parts house. He said the starter was a cheap piece of junk and usual for GMC. I replaced it and all is well. Other than this mishap, my Yukon has been a fabulous vehicle. My best ever, actually, and I've been a Suburban owner for about 20 years now.
