Rear Backing Plates/dust Shield

hey. im trying to replace the dust sheilds and backing plates on a 1 ton 11.5 AAM axle and ive got the 4 bolts loosened where the plates get bolted to the tubes, but i cant remove the shields bc theres something stopping the them from coming off that has a larger OD than the ID of the sheilds.

 

any help?

On my 01, I had to pull the axles to get the backing plates off. If you have a locker, you have to pull the locking pin almost out and rotate so you can remove the C-Clips out. Replace the axle seals when you do it. Took me 40 minutes to figure out the first side and about 10 minutes to do the other side once I figured out how to do it.

 

THis was on a 1500 chassis though so it may be a little different.
