8.5 Plug wires

Recommended Posts

Was thinking of upgrading the stock plug wires.  Will this small investment help me out any?  Do I need to do the plugs at the same time?  What type of wires have you had luck with?  Plugs?

Appreciate the info!

aside from the fact you can get them in red and blue (will match your truck) I don't think you'll feel any significant seat of the pants improvements on power.  You shouldn't need to do your plugs now unless you've put a ton of miles on your truck already.

I'm sure someone else would be good to ask (CMNTMXR81) and can give you some definitive answers on if they are worth the money or not.

I think they were worth it.  I put MSD 8.5mm Super Conductors on my truck and it is alot smoother now.  The truck moves smoother through acceleration and is much smoother accelerating at highway speeds.  I have noticed a little more power too.  I would recommend them just for the smoother running. :thumb:

I haven't changed the plugs yet, only have 10000 on the truck, but I am very happy with the wires.

Hey if you have money to burn go for it... plus they come in pretty colors...sorry about that but with a stock ignition system and stock motor why do it...kinda like killing a fly with a sledge-hammer....

Just my $0.02

Thanks for the info!  Do you remember which part number they were?  I am having bad luck locating wires made specifically for 99+ Silverado 5.3L....unless you just purchased the wires for the Corvette LS1 engine...

Which ignition system do you recommend?  Keep in mind that I do have the 5.3L with individual packs on each cylinder...

BTW....this engine will be supercharged as of this weekend...not sure if that will make a difference with the performance I should/could receive from the wires / ignition.

Tbyrne has them for the trucks. I put Taylors on mine (8mm) with a set of NGK TR55 plugs. It made a nice inprvment IMO in idle smoothness and low end acceleration (not quicker, but smoother). There are svereal places that have the MSD's or Taylor's. MTI, Thunder Racing, Tbyrne ( http://www.tbyrnemotorsports.com/truckcatalog.html ) He has Magnacores.

Just stay away from Bosch plugs on a stocker.  Too hot, my electrodes were all but stubs when I took them out today.  Absolute Bull$hit that just after 2 oil changes they are fouled out Peices of $hit.  That'll learn me from straying from delcos..... same applies to starters, plug wires, everything... if its not meant for performance don't bother.

Gawd, I wish I wouldn't have gotten hyped on that exp crap....

I honestly haven't shopped around for systems for the new trucks or talked to anyone I will research it and give you my opinion in a few if you like...

Just my .02; I know I will probably take some hits for this, but I hate to see good money wasted. For all but extremely high performance applications the following components will serve you as well, or better than the aftermarket mega suppliers components. Belden high performance plug wires 7mm, blue streak rotor and cap, a/c delco single probe plugs (standard not the split style that were made to match the other suppliers marketing ploys). If you look at the engineering aspect of these components it makes sense that they perform so well. They are engineered for the application. Blue streak and belden are not cheap, but they are well worth the cost. I have a nice set of used Bosch plugs with 25,000 miles on them for anyone interested; of course the probes are melted away and the posts are all different lenths now.  :)

What do you mean Bosch plugs are awesome.....

All the rice boys here at UK tell me by adding Bosch Platinum Plugs you add like 35hp to your car because you have quote, "four prongy things and they burn the gas faster" ....never mind how hot your ign. system is.....lol I thought you would like that

:)
