Heat Problems

So my 2000 Sierra 2500 6.0 heater sucks, about the month ago I disconnected the heater core hoses from the water pump and tried to blow out some of the junk I though was in it. Some stuff did come out and the heater was warm sometimes after that, then turned cold again after a week. So yesterday after having a wind chill of -11 I took it into a shop to get a coolent flush and that didn't work very well...My first thought is that there is still junk in the heater core and they didn't flush it very well, but of course they want me to pay the $700 to just replace it. Just wanted you opinion, thinking of taking it to get just the heater core backed flushed? What are your thoughts?

bite the bullet just change it..its probly plugged

+1

It may be past flushing to clear it. It happens. Good reason to change coolant on a regular schedule.

Are you sure its not a simple "blend door" issue?

Did you try a blend door reset? Common gmt-800 no heat issue.

$700 to replace the heater core is cheap! A GM dealer charges $1,100 bucks

because the entire dash has to come out!

I have not tried the blend door, I will give that a shot, what about a thrmostat, you think that could be it also?

man that sucks...... sorry to hear that. My heater core went out in my hemi ram one winter a day before a huge winter storm came through. Hell...... I even had radiator fluid coming out of the floor vent when the heater was on. Wanted to do it myself until I figured out you have to take the whole entire dash apart. $700 later my ass hurt but I had heat. I would def check the blend door, if thats good Im willing to bet the damn heater core is out :(

A bad thermostat would also cause overheating issues !

Are BOTH heater hoses equally hot to the touch at operating temp. ?

If so try:

Blend door reset:

Turn off heater controls.

Remove the 2 HVAC fuses from the underhood fuse center.

Wait 5 minutes.

Replace fuses

Turn key on. Do NOT touch heater controls!

You should hear blend door moving.............

DONE!

Bumping an old post but wanted to share my fix for others searching on heater issues. I rarely need my heater in Louisiana but after a recent cold front I noticed the heater wasn't blowing hot air. I have a 2010 5.3L with 40k miles. My brother suggested the miles were too low to have clogs in the heater core and that it was probably related to blend door or actuator issues. I spent half an hour searching/reading about blend door reset procedures, then when I opened the hood I noticed the big plastic Vortec cover on the engine had crimped one of the heater core hoses. A few weeks prior I had done a routine throttle body cleaning and when I reinstalled the plastic cover, instead of sliding the back left corner under the heater hoses, I had put it on top and crimped the hose, probably preventing any decent flow of coolant through the heater core. A foolish mistake but at least easy and free to fix!
