How Long Can You Freewheel Safely?

I know it says in the owners manual not to allow the tires to burnout(i don't remember the exact wording) because it will damage the drivetrain...but i know most of us do it, the question is how long can you let them spin without causeing damage?

yes i have, this was just a question out of curiosity...i'm by no means going to run out and lay a mile long strip of rubber

If you let it wheelhop it can tear things up FAST. Otherwise the time limit is probably the abuse you are comfortable putting into the back brakes.

My street/strip Caprice has the 4L60E, 8.5" 10bolt in cold weather I will really lay into it at the dragstrip and warm up the 28x10.50 Mickey Thompson ET Drags, if it is good and cold they do not put down water, have seen 100mph during the burnout, probably kept into it over 10 seconds. Never had an axle problem and the ProBuilt Automatics tranny is over 7 years old.

Honestly with the gov-loc I am not comfortable with a pavement burnout, once you drive a proper posi the gov-loc is just too harsh and late to engage.

i have beaten the shit out of the G80 and its holding up well, still works flawlessly with 87,500 miles on it right now. i have done dry and wet burnouts, attempts at drifting, endless drifting and burnouts on the snow, offroading and its never let me down. i like the G80.

its really not that bad to spin the rear tires a little on soft surfaces such as snow, theres not much stress or anything. like others have said wheel hop is really bad.

As long as the rear tires still have life in them here. My g80 is doing just fine and locks up instantly everytime I spin, it almost seems like a limited slip it operates so smoothly. Of course I do have a 10.5" rear end.

Never had a problem doing any of the things mentioned. I've spun quite a bit in the mud while playing around, spun in the snow just because its fun to go sideways, and I've even done my fair share of dry pavement burnouts. I'm probably tempting fate, but so far so good on the stock G80! *:knocks on wood:* :dunno:
