Programming Remotes

Hey everyone,

Last night was my first night with the new truck and I noticed that one of the supplied remotes does not work (both keys are fine). I did some searching and in previous models people mentioned there being a menu in the DIC for this- my truck has the full DIC but does not have this option. The other info I got (thanks to MS3Dale) seems to indicate I need to have a dealer do it with their scan tool. Can someone confirm this? I'm away for the rest of the week for work and will be next week too so getting to the dealer is going to be real tough for the next few weeks and I'd like to avoid going there if possible. Or am I out of luck?

Yes you have to go to the dealer. GM changed this for 2011. This appeared in the January GM Techlink.

If the owner of a 2011 Impala, Escalade model, Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Sierra, Yukon, Yukon Denali, Yukon XL, or Yukon Denali XL requests to have a Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter (key fob) programmed, a scan tool must be used. This does not apply to Impala and Tahoe fleet vehicles.

TIP: Starting in the 2011 model year, key fobs can only be programmed using a scan tool.

In previous model years, it was possible to program key fobs for these vehicles using the vehicle's Driver Information Center (DIC), if equipped. Programming key fobs through the DIC is no longer an option on the 2011 model year vehicles.

- Thanks to Dave Eplin

Allright, that is what I was afraid of. :) Looks like I'll have to make some time for a run out there later this week or something.
