Sometimes, I Wonder What They're Smoking Across The Pond...

I don't even know what to say..

I can understand the lack of personal transportation in poor 3rd world countries that can't even afford housing, food and clothing, but in 1st world modern countries, to take the choice away from people and try and force public transportation down their throats, doesn't make sense today.. 70 years ago, yeah it should have started then..

and what will they do without all the personal vehicle related revenue they generate with their registrations, taxes, citations and traffic enforcement..

sounds like they might be headed toward cutting off their noses to spite their faces..

good luck with that plan EU..

Bottom line is it is 39 years from now, gas and diesel powered cars are likely going to be a thing of the past by then, a total ban is ridiculous tho because if you have a nice classic you should still be able to enjoy it.. That isn't really a bad thing either, chances are whatever replaces gas will be better anyway. I for one would way rather a truck powered by something that the price of goes up every time some people in various parts of the world decide to revolt, or some natural disaster. I would drive an electric truck right now if it could go 400miles on a charge and have the same performance as the 5.3 I have, it would be far better around town as with the instant torque you get away form a dead stop a lot better, it is the top end that is a problem but really do anyone of use drive over 80mph anyway?

I just don't understand why people are so upset about losing a junk fuel that costs far too much, I think if you ask anyone from the gulf of mexico they will agree there is a better way than oil.

I agree there are better ways than oil, but I don't agree with taking choices from citizens away, if I choose to have a gas vehicle that should be my choice, public transportation should not be shoved down my throat.

something else to consider is that not everyone can have an electric vehicle, people that live in apartments or condo type communities, that don't have their own private garage would likely not have a place to charge an electric vehicle.

there are other choices, all the buses in Los Angeles have been running on CNG for years, close to 20 I believe, why do we not have vehicle that can run on CNG? why do we not have stations, or the ability to fill those CNG vehicles from the CNG connections at our homes? Honda tried that several years ago, it when over like a lead balloon.

this announcement by the EU is just typical of large government agencies opening their big mouths without thinking thru the problem first.

Things are a lot different in europe, I lived in London for 3 year and Northern England for a year, lots of people use public transport now and many dont have cars, let alone drivers licences. The infrastructure for cars just is not there for the most par so it becomes a pain to actually own a car or travel by car. I am not supporting public transport, I hate it, I would walk before taking a bus, but subway systems are the fastest way to cross a city at rush hour, there is no denying that. I would however rather travel by rail for long distances rather than car or even plane, rail travel is fantastic.

As far as charing goes they are planning charging point almost every where in major cities, where ever there is a parking spot they want a charge point. Eventually they will develop rapid charging as well where you will just stop into a station and charge in a few minutes rather than hours. Personally I think hydrogen is the way forward not electric.

The thing with the EU parliament is they are basically a bunch of do gooders with big lofty ideas trying to create the prefect place to live.

personal choice is very important

The innovation which we have achieved in both efficiency and power with IC is what has kept electric cars so cost prohibitive for so long. And in regards to the gulf, I bet those people like the industry. It gives them plenty of JOBS.

They are banning oil based fuels, not internal combustion engines. The move is probably to solidify the direction of the market towards their goals. Right now we have several companies with alternatives to fossil fuels but the large companies that could fund such a thing have figured out that gas needs to be above X dollar amount for Y amount of time for it to be financial successful and given the volatility of oil they're not willing to take that risk. Oil will continue to go up and down and we really don't have control. If oil were to spike for whatever reason to something astronomical and gas is like $20 a gallon or not available then you really don't have a choice in the matter. Laws like this provide other reasons to pursue such paths. I'm not advocating the model here but I lived in Munich for a while and never needed a car. Cities laid out several thousand years ago are better suited for public transport then anything in this country.

It's only a proposal and not a ban.

"(RTTNews) - The European Commission has presented its Roadmap for the Future of Transport 2050, aiming for an effective system which is cleaner and which reduces the EU's dependency on oil."

And at least the Europeans are thinking ahead.

Would be nice if US politician could make plans that far into the future instead of just the next election.
