Defensive Parking -- Some People Ruin It

Does anyone park defensively to avoid those inconsiderate people who just let their doors fly open? Where I work has a parking structure and I usually park in the corner of the lot, next to the corner space -- the corner space is cross-hatched because no one is supposed to park in the corner. I park (always back in) in the space right next to the cross-hatching and let my 2 driver's side tires park in the cross-hatching. This gives me a lot of space btwn the passengers side of my truck and the space next to me (at least 3 to 4 feet). Usually, someone else in a nice truck does the same thing in the space that is 90 degrees to the corner that I am crowding -- he crowds the other side. All is fine. The two of us have nice big spots. UNTIL.....

Some moron has been parking in the cross hatched corner!! Squeezing in their vehicle because the lot is full. Almost certian that is where the scuff on my door rub strip came from. It's not even a spot and they park there because they don't want to go park in the satalite lots when the structure is full.

OR.....

Someone will park in my spot -- since i biased one side, they do the same and park IN my spot by a couple of feet.

I have now resorted to getting into work early enough and parking on the end of a row by a cememt wall that protects some water lines for the fire dept. I can park by this cement wall and NO ONE can "Art" my car. (Art is a co-worker who purposely flings his door open whenever he can and TRIES to tap someone's car or truck....guess he is jeleous. NO ONE parks by his car.)

I usually try to park somewhere similar, but so far haven't ran into anyone quite like you have. And as far as 'Art' goes, he would be met in a dark alley somewhere.

i do this all the time. i travel a lot for work and have to leave my truck at the airport. i'll drive around in the parking structure for 20 minutes if i have to in order to find a spot with a cement wall etc. on one side, and hunker up against it. occasionally i won't be so lucky and have to park in a typical space, and inevetably when i return from my trip i'm sandwiched in. it's exponentially worse at the airport because people are wrestling bags out of their car so the potential for a door ding skyrockets. that, and well, most people just don't give a shit and fling their doors open carelessly. long story short: i feel your frustration.

Thats what happens without assigned parking. As far as that art guy goes I believe that some ppl are just born morons are you cant do anything about it.

Park on a corner spot 99% of the time. That way only one side someone will park next to. I also park a mile away when we go shopping. 1 it protects our vehicles and 2 it gets some extra walking in (better health :P )

leave him a little note stating "if you park there again, i will ticket you"

i do the same thing- my fiancee complains about it though. but it beats trying to finagle my way into a tight mall parking space.

When I travel for work the truck just goes in the way back of the parking garage with the other folks who have cars they care about. At the office, people know how I am about my vehicles and respect that (small company) so I'm safe there. Everywhere else I go, I just park way out and walk.

I do the same in commuter parking at school. I try to park in the spots where one side is protected by flower bed and has a curb infront of it. That way my side is protected and some moron can't park and let their car roll forward into my truck. There are too many dumb people in college that daddy bought everything for them and they could give a rat's ass if they hit your vehicle.

i always try to park out in the boonies, i use to not care too much until one day i was parked quite aways out and some dumb ass with a tahoe parked an inch from my passenger side then slammed his door into my fender and all he had to say was sorry dude and walked away...now i will park out in Bum **** egypt and walk 3 miles before i get door dinged anymore

Some people at school think I'm nuts, but I park all the way at the end of the lot near the dumpsters and the corner of the fencing. No one is rarely withing about 10 spots of my truck other than my buddies. Every where else I try to get a curb spot and almost never park between two cars.

I am the same way. I park at the side of my school where there may be 3 or 4 vehicles all day and a still park the farthest away. I really don't care what my peers think about me parking there. :P

At school there isnt much parking and i try to get the closest one because we literally have to climb up the side of a very very steep hill to get to class...and once thats done i still got to climb stairs to get to my class room

I'm lucky. I get to park in disabled parking and the one at my office is a corner with one side to the curb and walkway with the crosshatch giving me about 4 feet on the drivers side. And the disabled van crosshatch on the passenger side which is about 5 feet of space.

In addition the CEO parks his 2011 BMW 7 series next to me and is just as disinterested in door dings as I am.

In most public places I usually go for the extra wide disabled van slots. If I can't find one then I will park in the boonies.

i usually park pretty far away but my trucks got its share of scuffs on it since its a decade old, the dings and scratches dont piss me off as much as the people who do it. if i ever caught someone dinging my vehicle, it would not end well.

if i see another chevy pickup, i tend to try and park next to them because most chevy truck owners have a respect for other chevs.
