Anyone have powder coated rims? How do you care for them? Any special things you need to do? Are they easier to care for than the stock style rims?

Thanks!

Another thing I was wondering how they hold up with weather (rain/snow/salt, etc)

Don't have my rims powder coated, but I had the frame on my 79 Monte Carlo powder coated several yrs ago. Since then I have put a few thousand miles on it including several hour trips on the high way, and I haven't noticed any chips or scratches. I just use car soap and water.

A friend of mine had the summer wheels professionally painted for his car a few years ago and has mixed results, they have to be repainted every year and cared for the same as paint. He was going to switch to powdercoat but after research it seems that powdercoating isnt much better, although they are more durable and you can scrub them with a wheel brush so they are better for daily driving. The finish isnt the best though with lots of orange peel when you are close up, but that is just powder coating in general because of the thickness. One thing that people kept saying was powder coat is available in very limited colors but it turns out that there are lots of colors just the place you use might not have the one you want so shop around.

Just curious what color were you looking to do them?

A silver color. The place I would have them done (not yet) has some color charts by the manufacturers. I never knew there were so many shades of silver. One reason why I may look at this option is the wheel weights on my 2 back rims have scratched the clear and at the edges of the weights are starting to look like crap.

You should be able to have that repaired no problem, just look for a place to does repairs to curbed wheels and then of course use stick on weights

The shop is a good one. They do a bunch of work for the racing industry. I had some blasting work on our old wagon (radio flyer) done there. I talked to them and they have same day turn around which is pretty nice.

I wouldn't call it "easier". But I wouldn't call it "harder" either. I know several guys that have powdercoated their wheels and one of the sets of wheels I have on my GTO is powdercoated a satin black. They collect dust faster than normal, but that's about it. Pretty sure that's the clear on top of the factory stuff (that powdercoating doesn't have) doing it's job.

I been wondering the same thing. Also are they very easily scratched up when being mounted and balanced?

Powdercoat is pretty tough stuff, it's harder to scratch than paint, but not impossible.

Juuuuuust fine.
