Headlight Lens Protectors

Recommended Posts

ok... so i'm getting ready to order some "protective" type parts for the new truck (bed liner, mud flaps, bug deflector, rear wheel liner).

while browsing the weather tech site i saw some 3m film type protectors for the headlights. as big and bold as the headlights are on this truck... i'm considering picking some up.

my question - has anyone had any headlight cracks or breaks from rocks? how do they hold up to abuse? is it worth putting some 3m clear film over them?

Funny,I have those for my truck but never put them on yet! :sigh:

I actually use to run clear headlight covers, the ones from GTS or AVS,But they don't make them in clear for the new-style trucks.

My opinion,I don't think its a bad idea at all to install them

I put some headlight protectors on my truck as soon as I bought it. Mine are made by Rok-Guards but AutoAnything doesn't sell them anymore. My saved link brings me to an X-Pel product. Anyway, I'm sure they are similar to all of the other products out there.

Mine have held up very well. There are no signs of cracks, fading or discoloration. A heat gun is a must when you apply these protectors (to squeegee out the water and air bubbles). I wouldn't even try using a hair dryer unless I had hours to spend and even then you probably won't be as successful as using a heat gun. If the strength of the plastic headlights is anything like the strength of the steel on our trucks (or lack of), I would install them.

Just a quick heads up... go to any sign company that is local to you and ask for 2 sq ft of OPTICALLY CLEAR LAMINATE. Its the exact same stuff and a lot cheaper. Grab a squeegee, and maybe a heat gun (as previously noted) but you don't need a heat gun if you just take your time and apply decent pressure. Just remove the liner and apply to the lights. Once its on, grab an exacto knife and trim off the excess lam. Granted optically clear lam is more expensive than regular clear vinyl or regular lam, but it really does make all the difference.
