Rusty Bumpers

Anyone know what's up with the 2010 bumpers? My Sierra has rust leaking down the front bumper and a few spots on the back.

I took it to the dealer and he said the 2010's have this problem and they don't know why?????

And to bring it back in the spring.

Brought it back today and they said they are going to order new bumpers. Didn't tell me what the problem was--I didn't push for an answer as I just wanted the oil change/tire rotation done so I could go home. . . .

I have seen quite a few in the dealer I work at for them. Sometimes its just surface rust spots that come right off, some don't. I have no idea why, but they do.

And, hey, what do you think? The side rails also have rust spots on them. Truck is not yet one year old. Should I get them to replace those too? Wonder what the warranty is on them---they came from the dealer. I have seen them get rust spots real fast though--can't say for sure under a year, but earlier than you'd think. Maybe it's normal for them . . . .

Are you talking about the chrome running boards? I've have seen other threads where people have gotten dealer to replace them but only if dealer installed them. Either way I'd ask them about it.

For you guys that have rust forming on the bumpers, is the backside of the chrome just metal or does it have a coating? On my 09 2500HD all my metal bumper parts are painted black on the inside (came that way from the factory), just wondering if they went cheap and changed things. maybe that might be part of the problem if so.

Some of it could be rail dust or from the cheap non galvanized bolts that

hold the bumpers on corroding and the moisture runoff rust streaking

the chrome bumpers. Same deal with the bed grab rails!

I also note complaints from other older gmt-900 owners of "streaks" marking

the paint under the side mirrors. (mine too!)

Again my body man bud sez this is also from the cheap non-galvanized

bolts holding the mirrors to the door.

A bit of rubbing compound on a rag and some elbow grease should

remove the marks..............

My bumper was doing to same thing after this winter.

I asked the dealer about it and they said that since the chrome wasn't bubbled they weren't covered under warranty. I think that for $45,000 I shouldn't have to worry about the bumpers rusting away.

Does not matter how much you paid for your truck. Rust happens, on new, used, cheap, expensive stuff. There are no guarantees in life, there is just life. Get used to it.

inflation is dictating the price of your truck mostly, my truck has rusty bumpers but i live with it...a dollar amount will not stop decay, if it was that easy we'd all be young forever

Hmmm, find another dealer?? Weird. My bumpers have not bubbled either. Just weeping rust. They are just automatically replacing, no questions asked. Which tells me they know there is a problem but are too cheap to actually recall? lol.

EXACTLY. There are far more important things in life to stress out about.

I don't know. To me a 55,000 investment rusting through before the 15 years I need it for are up, well, that's pretty stressful. Not like I can afford to replace it when it can no longer do it's job!!! And since there is some questionable staining by the rocker panel . . .. . . . . .. . I am rather concerned this is something more than faulty bumpers. Heck, I can barely afford the payments what with wage freezes and gas prices!! lol.

The problem with your statement is that if you deliberately make the parts cheap with inadequate chrome layer and preparation, they will corrode a lot faster than well made parts. Nobody will be surprised if a 10 year old truck bumper shows some rust spots. However, if this happens on a new truck which is 4 months old, you can assume that the parts are substandard, which is a real problem. Especially given the astronomical sticker prices on these trucks these days.
