Updating Audio System W/ Stock Parts?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I just found this forum and I am hoping to get a little advice. I know that I don't own a GM truck ('03 Olds Silhouette), but I don't think that should be an issue when only dealing with the audio system. At least I hope not! :-)

I started thinking about replacing my radio after several failed attempts to add iPhone support to my current setup. I have the stock GM CD/Cassette deck radio in the van now. I purchased an iSimple device that was supposed to install and just work by allowing me to hear and control the iPhone via the stock system. Unfortunately no go! So at this point I am considering upgrading the stock sound system and would like to know the best radio to use.

I am considering one of the Navigation units. I have found a GM UM8 radio for a decent price, that should plug/bolt right in. I have a close friend that has access to a Tech 2 to reprogram the VIN, so I'm not worried about that much of the install. What I need to know is this. Does the UM8 have an internal AMP for the speakers, or do I need to pull one out of a different vehicle. I tried looking but can't seem to find the definitive answer to this. Also, is there an Aux port to allow the iPhone's audio to come out of the speakers? Or is there an iPhone kit to allow full control through the radio? If no to both of those, what head unit would you recommend that has an aux input connected via the back of the radio?

My overall goal is to keep the stock look of the van. I know I can go aftermarket much easier probably, but I'd prefer not to unless I have no other choice. Thanks for reading!
