Changing the antenna on a Silverado (2001)

Has anyone upgraded the factory antenna on their 1999-2001 Silverado?  

 

I bought a shorter rubber antenna, and want to take the other one off, but I can't figure it out.  It looks like I will have to take OFF the fender, and all this crap, seems a little excessive for just an antenna...  Has anyone done this?  I need help.  My factory antenna broke, and I need to remedy the radio situation post haste  ???

Towards the botom of the antenna it gets a bit fatter, I'd say in the last 2" or so.  It also is notched on both sides.  You can take a crescent wrench and unscrew the antenna, it's pretty simple.
