Trying To Find A 180 Thermostat - 2007 V-max 6.0

Hi,

2007 1500 LT VortecMax 6.0l.

I got a Black Bear tune (93 octane) a few weeks ago on my truck at the 'tune event' in Ft Worth. Love it - no AFM, better shifts, better towing characteristics, less down-shifting when towing, well worth the money.

At the time, Justin set the fans to come at a lower temp since I said that I was planning to put in a 180 thermostat instead of the 195 (?) stock one. The truck has run at 210 indicated (201 according to Justin's computer) since new - empty, towing 6500lbs (which I do a lot), a/c on/off, whatever. No problems at all; just want to see a little lower temp to help when under a load.

The problem is that I can't find a 180 degree thermostat. Hypertech says they do't even make one (their tech support said that the 180 was the stock temp thermostat! Not sure about I agree with that.). SLP only makes a 160 (too cold for the open-loop/closed-loop deal) and Summit and Jegs seem to be confused as to whether they have one or not.

So, does anyone know if a 180 thermostat is made for the 6.0 and, if so, who makes it?

Thanks,

walt z.

I did this mod on my 04 GTO. For me, the 195* thermostat( stock) landed me in the 212*+ range. With the 160* thermostat. im in the 180*'s.

Hope this helps.

I love my BB Tune also!

The only thing a lower temp stat does is lower the opening point. The truck will run at the temp it wants. If you've fattened up the mixture it might run a cooler. The fans in my Vette come on at 226. It's never been a problem. I know some of it is for emissions but if you run it hard it will heat up.

The truck has enough cooling capacity (as evidenced by the fact that it runs with the current temp nailed on 210 indicated in whatever conditions it is subjected to) to handle a lower temp Thermostat and run at that lower temp. My fans have already been set to a lower "on" temp, but are just 'spinning it's wheels' (blades?) with the stock thermostat.

Anybody find/put in a 180 thermostat in this type of engine?

Thanks.

The fans are only of use when truck is stopped, or driving very slow, or one I think comes on with the a/c regardless of engine temps. No fans at highway speeds, Although logic tells me that they come on to not disrupt or block air flow on the highway. I was never a fan (no pun intended) of using lower than designed thermostats on odbii controls.

the stock t-stat is 187*...

Its been a while since I commented on my thermostat issue. So...

First, to 06MonteSS, you are correct. 187 (86c) is the stock thermostat in my 6.0. I pulled it out and it is the stock one and stamped "86c", so "Huzzah" to you. Thus my inability to find many 180 thermostats. I finally broke down and put in a 160 degree thermostat (Mr Gasket 6367 - 11.95 at Summit with my discount).

Installation was fairly painless, though messy because of no drain cock on the radiator. I pulled the lower radiator hose, but at the thermostat housing end with the lower hose pinched off with a pair of long-nosed vise grips. Only leaked out about 1/2 gallon instead of 3 gallons! Pull out the old one and put in the new one. Get rid of the spring hose clamp (what an absolute PIA that is!!)and replace with screw-type clamp.

Temp now runs from 180 to 210 (indicated) depending if the fans are on or not. It actually runs cooler when the a/c is on since the fans are on. Running down the highway with no a/c and 105 degrees outside temp, temp is around 190 steady. Around town, same outside temp, runs up to 210 indicated (like before BB tune and with old thermostat) and stays until the fans come on and then it cools down. With a/c on, on highway and around town, temp is about 185. I need to talk to BB since the "On" temp was supposed to be lowered to about 190, but that is a minor deal. I think that the temps look high enough to make the "closed-loop/open-loop" deal a non-issue.

I have a 60 mile tow this weekend (race car and trailer), so we'll see how it acts, but I forsee no problems. I'll let y'all know.

Thanks for all of your help and comments.

    • Yeah I don’t leave ANYTHING just sitting supposedly maintaining my battery on a vehicle or RV for multiday periods. I connect a charger as needed to provide a full charge, then disconnect it and either monitor the battery or follow a set schedule for periodic charging.
    • Get the 5.3. I`m not a Ford guy.😉   I think these L84`s are less problematic than the L83`s. Certainly less than the L87.
    • I have finally paid off my mortgage and can now purchase a new truck. I would greatly appreciate any opinions on the purchase of a new 2026 GMC Denali 5.3L or 6.2L with the Denali reserve package. I am not interested in the 3.0L.  Or should I go buy a Ford?   Thank, John
    • One of the few things I enjoyed about my time in the midwest was taking off on weekend drives. Unlike home, where we are boxed in by mountains and water, those rules don't apply to the inland plains. Roads connect and sprawl everywhere. While Minnesota is flat, it's not completely featureless and there are fast moving rural roads with curves and slight elevation changes. I used to relish heading out in a particular direction with no set destination, no curfew, and weaving through little townships, wherever the roads would take me. Along farms, lakes, or through the deciduous trees... It was beautiful in its own way, and the seasons were so distinct there. Fall drives yielded amazing shows of color and contrast. Summer drives rewarded with the and amber evening glow of the prairie (and lots of juicy bugs).    I do a lot of that here in my home state too. But it's much less mysterious/intriguing. I've traveled most roads in the region, and every road that's fun to drive within a good radius of my house. But every drive, even on the same old roads, is still enjoyable. I know where I can lean hard into the throttle or really throw the car into a curve. There are exercise loops for when I just need to keep certain cars limber, and much longer routes to settle in and enjoy a drive and put some miles on. All the mountains and water make for some really awesome roads for spirited driving. But not all my driving is spirited, for example, that's not really enjoyable in my pickup or this Blazer (that's still here...).   Sometimes a good drive is followed by a ritualistic wash before tucking the car away...
    • 'GMAuthority' is reporting the 2027 HD's will have the L8S 6.6L gasoline V-8.  There was some talk here about the L8S awhile back.  Not sure what changes it will have now as it seems the 2027 emissions regulations have changed from what was originally proposed.  The big question will be is L8S just a stopgap for the last 2 years of the current T1 HD platform or will it carry forward to the next generation 2029 T1-2 HD's?    I assume the L8S will still be a Gen. V engine.
