Voltage Problem With Backup Camera

Recommended Posts

Just install a new backup camera and it been working on and off but never consistent. I have the power connect to the backup light of my 2009 Sierra and run the video cable to the monitor in the cab of the truck. The camera and the monitor are compatible with both PAL and NTSC. When I put the truck in reverse the camera will come on sometime it won't, and sometimes it will come on but with interference. I connected a different video source to the video cable at the rear of the truck and had a good stable picture on the backup monitor. I check the voltage coming from the back up light and was found to be 14.5 to 14.7 volts, a little high. So then a put a different voltage supply to the backup camera (12.5 V) and had a good stable picture on the backup monitor.

Has any one had this or have heard of this type of problem and how did you fix it. I was thinking on installing a 12V voltage regulator (LM7812) with two capacitors on the input and output.

Could someone add their thoughts?

Thats weird. 14volts is standard on vehicles (the battery is 12v but the alternator puts out 14). Where did you get the camera from? I ran a power line to inside the cabin and tap the reverse light at the BCM (above your left foot under the dash). I measured 14 volts out of it and my camera works just fine.

The setup you have is the same as what I got

Strange???

Might want to email the guy and see if maybe you got a bad camera. No reason you should have to step down the voltage.

Yes I might, just would like to confirm that the voltage is the problem.

The ground was one of the 1st things I thought of and I made sure I had a tight ground

If it is the same guys I bought from, he was really helpful when I had questions. Even sent me his cell. It has to be the camera, doesnt make any sense otherwise.

You could run the video out to a tv just to confirm it is not some incompatibility between the camera and the head unit. Very unlikely but at least you cross it off the list of things to troubleshoot.
