Dogg Problem

Ok here goes.  We have 2 golden retrivers.  One is 9 yrs old and the other is 4 months old.

When playing like i have a toy and throw it the older dog will go get it then the puppy will also go and the older dog will give in and let it go when the little guy gets close.  He wont even fight for it.  Just drops it and runs away (upstairs or to mom).  I dont know if he is to mellow but most of the time he hates being around the puppy.  Its wierd.  The puppy (mini me) has lost most of his teeth and is basically done teething so he doesnt (and never really did we didnt let him) bite the older dog

Any tips?

Thanks

:D

Does the older dog seem to get aggrevated with the pup or just kind of ignore him? Either way I would say they just need to spend as much time together as they can. It may be hard for them to develop a "buddy" relationship given the age difference.

He doesnt get mad at him.  He gives in to easy

Maybe he is scared of him cause he is small?

They are getting better

The puppy is much more of an outdoors dog.  He chases everything that moves.  He is even chasing squirrels (even when they start barking at him)

He didnt really enjoy swimming til the end of the season.  I coul have been my dad scared him when he threw him in??? haha

My brother in law has two german short-hairs that he hunts with. One of which will not go anywhere near water. So when they come to a creek he has to be carried across.

My brother in law wasn't to happy when he found out the reason for this. My sister used to dump water on the dog for constantly barking. :D

The older dog may be reacting to the puppy getting all the attention he used to get. He may not have a problem with the new dog as much as a problem with you and the other family members. He's (in his opinion) not top dog anymore. And may give in to the puppy in fear of retaliation from you if he challenges "your new favorite". Sort of like the older kids respond to a new baby in the house. Dogs are so domesticated they go through many of the emotions a human will as well as depression. Just a thought. :D

This isnt the case.  The puppy is lockedup (with gates) in our dining room most of the time.  The older dog gets just as much attention if not more since we got the new dog.

Especially now with my mom being out of work
