"new" Delphi Power Steering Gear Box Has About 2 Degrees Of

Is this common for new power steering gear boxes to have play? I can clearly see the input shaft turning but do not see the pitman arm move.

This is a new Delphi gear box sold by PCS.

 

I have replaced the upper A-arm bushing, upper/lower ball-joints and all of the tie-rods.

Rag joint was replaced last year.

Yes. Return it for one without play.

Interesting I was starting to wonder if I am missing something.

 

I have tried two steering boxes rebuilt by a local guy, one A-1 Cardone, one rebuilt GM box. Are you sure I am not missing anything. Are my eyes tricking me?

No, you're not but I can tell you that the A-1 Cardone and GM rebuilt box (if the GM was painted) were rebuilt by the same company hense the same issue.

 

If a local guy can't get it right, he's missing some steps during assembly then. Again, send back the box you have and get one that doesn't have play in it. I've been through 6 before I got a good one, from GM, myself.

Is there a better way to test to see if there is slack before installing the box?

Install the pitman arm, without tightening it's nut to press it on, and "feel" for the play in the gear while rocking the pitman arm side to side.
