97 Gmc Sierra Coolant Leak

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I have a coolant leak on my 97 GMC Sierra 2500. I was convinced it was the water pump so I replaced the pump and gaskets 2 days ago. Today the leak re-appered. I have checked the hoses already. What else should I be looking at to rectify the problem?

From what I see it is leaking from the engine behind the thermostate. It looks like there is a leaking gasket behind there that run across the engine (from what I can see)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the head gasket is leaking would it leak to the outside of the engine or only on the inside?

It seems to only leak when its cold as well if that helps at all...

Had a 97. That was the only year they made the intake manifold plastic. The gasket has a tendency to blow out because you can only tighten the plastic so much without breaking it. had to replace it twice in the 8 years I had the truck. Mine was a 1500 though, so not sure if the same applies.

My 98 Yukon has pot metal connection for heater hose, mine leaked and ran along the head and off the back of the engine, intermittently. When I got the part (Dorman replacement part), the old connector broke off flush with the intake manifold (it was rotted and just came apart). I was able to screw broken part out of intake and replace it easily. Not sure if 97 has the same or not..

Well I started cleaning off cleaning up the wet spots again I picked off a part of a gasket with my fingure and I ended up with a good drip of coolant, I think I found the problem lol.

Any tips/link to help me through working to replace this part?

Thanks

I have all the hoses, bolts, wires and cables I can see off the manifold and I am still unable to get it off. It is loose, I can move it side to side up and down about half an inch in each direction. Is their something I may have missed?

Thanks.

I figured everything else out, now I am re-assembaling and I cant seem to find a torque for the rock arm bolts. Can someone shed some light on this for me?

For the new gen 4.8 it's 22 ft/lbs. Dude, you should really go to alldatadiy.com and get a subscription for service and repair information. You would be able to get all the guidance you could ever want. Also, you get all of the TSB's for your truck. It is the exact same stuff as the factory repair manual. I use it all the time.
