1993 Gmc Sierra K2500 Tranny Problems And Other Things

ok so been a while since i posted here. And now it seems i am having yet another issue with my truck.

This time i know the problem is my transmission. I discovered the problem when i was driving down the highway heading to my mother in-laws place. We quickly discovered that it the truck would not shift into 3rd or OD, not even when we tried manually shifting it.

We drove the truck back to town in limp mode. Which from what i found out is the truck not allowing the tranny to shift higher than second in order to prevent further damage to itself. I checked fluid levels, topped up where needed, checked for pinched or broken wires. Everything seems to look in order.

I called a few tranny places and they both told me that it does not sound like the solenoids as they say they are set in : 1-4 and 2-3 not 1-2, 3-4 as i thought based on information on the 4L60-E i found via google. They say it sounds like the 3-4 clutch is gone and the tranny needs a rebuild (est. Price: $2500 , HOLY OUCH) and a second hand tranny runs about $600-800 on a good day and when available.

now my first question is does it seem more plausible that it is the 3-4 clutch? Or should i go ahead and replace the solenoids?

i do not want to replace the solenoids if the problem is more likely to be the 3-4 clutch, being that replacing the solenoids is not a simple 1-2-3 done, and if it turns out to be the 3-4 clutch that is a days work and a few hundred bucks flushed down the toilet.

Now my other questions

Would it be possible to put a 4L65-E on my truck, are they be compatible?

i am considering a complete tear down and rebuild of my truck and i am curious if i was to get a engine and tranny from a newer version of my truck , say a 2000 sierra, how easy would it be to drop them in? (this is just an idea that ran through my head so thought i would ask)

anyway that is it for now. Thanks in advance for any suggestions and advice you have.
