Just Did Tranny Pan And Filter

On the GMT-800s that seal that's up in the transmission (at the end of the filter stem) is a real sweetie isn't it? I tried using a hook. Didn't move a bit. I ended up prying it with a screwdriver (deforming it) and then pulling it out with pliers. Also, I thought I could get away with not removing the shift linkage as I had no problems getting to the pan bolts behind it. That was just a dream. Those star screws holding that on were a sweetie also. The drain pan I was using ended up having a hole in it, resulting in my practically bathing in ATF fluid when reassembling things (had to throw the shirt away) Finally, to cap it off, it looks like somebody who previously serviced the tranny failed to put the magnet back in the pan so I am running a no-pan-magnet 4L60e.

When I was taking the pan off the nuts were only on hand tight. I know they're not supposed to be torqued to the max or anything, but that seemed a little light. I just turned them down snug using a 3/8 drive ratchet. That's seems right, yeah?

Having said that, it's done.

This was the first time doing it myself, normally I just take it in. I've been doing it every 25k.

It's too bad that you went to all that trouble and didn't drain the converter. Although if you've been doing it every 25K and not towing, you should be good. Next time, consider doing the whole thing. It isn't hard.

The magnet doesn't have to be inside the pan to work. You could just put a magnet on the outside of the pan. Any metal that sinks to the bottom of the pan will stay there.

Yeah i used a file to weaken that seal then like you i deformed it and used pliers. you should get a magnet.

That's a really good idea/point!
