Temp/Compass and ICE

I saw this asked over on the other forum. The other day, my temp/compass readout on the rearview mirrow said "Ice" on the display when it was 35 degrees after a snowfall. It also did this on a foggy morning at around the same temps. I'd assume that any time it gets 32 deg. or below that it would remind us of the possibility of ice. However, I've seen it below 30 on a clear and dry morning and no mention of ice. What parameters does this gadget use to estimate (other than temp) when there may be ice present? I've looked all over the manual and I must be blind:lol:.

I think it just flashes ice at 37 degrees and below.  I'm not sure why 37 though.

I can understand the 37 degree thing since bridges and overpasses can be at freezing temps when everything else is still above. I guess what puzzles me is why it doesn't mention Ice when it is obviously below freezing   ???

Generally if it's below freezing it's not going to be icy since precipitation will be in the form of snow and not rain.

 

I have also wondered how it is programmed to display ice (what temp. range, etc.)  Maybe it says in the manual?
