6sp Vs 4 Spd Reverse Gear

OK I was backing my boat up the hill into my garage with my 6.0 and 4:10's and the thought

dawned on me, the new tranny's mean a higher rear gear. So what about reverse is the reverse gear

lower in the 6 speeds to make up for taller gears in the rear? Or would the 3:42's kind of suck in

reverse?

4 speed- 2.294:1

6 speed- 3.06:1

 

Not gonna do the math but I'm sure it's more than fine. At low speeds the torque converter will help anyhow.

4-speed has a reverse gear of 2.294 and the 6-speed has 3.064 so yes it's lower

4.10 * 2.294 = 9.4

3.42 * 3.064 = 10.5

 

Newer is still shorter, which I think is great for reverse. No need to do 50mph in reverse.

It really shouldn't matter that much at low speeds on an automatic with a torque converter. The TC does a lot of extra work when the drive shaft rpm is less than engine rpm... meaning the TC adds *significant* torque "amplification" during "slip" conditions. Less gearing means more work for the TC. I'd guess there would be no perceivable difference between them in real life backing situations, but the steeper gear would be more efficient.
