mas0324 Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 This is something I have never encountered before and I am very much confused and lost. A few days ago I tried to fill my tank and the pump kept shutting off. I got enough in for my trip and since it was not my regular station thought it might be just the pump. Went to my regular station and used my regular pump and no joy. Got 2 litres in and it backed up out the pipe and all over the side of the truck. Tried a second time later and decided that after 3 failures there is something not right. I dropped the tank in the driveway and there are no blockages in the filler neck or hose or the inlet to the tank itself. I did however see an orange valve in the tank inlet. It was closed but did move very easily. Poked at it several times to verify it movement and reassembled everything. Took it to the station and spent 15 minutes putting in 60 litres. I have had a p0455 code and a tighten gas cap message on the dic. Is the orange valve a safety? If not should it be open or closed? Do I need a new fuel tank? The sender unit is installed like they never want it to be removed so I was not opening it all up in the driveway. Please. Any help or thoughts would certainly be appreciated. It is not too cold yet but winter will be here soon and 15 minutes for 60 litres will put me in icicle land.
jro909 Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 common problem if i remeber right..i think the solution was to stick the nozzle in and slightly pull it back...something to do with the flap??
Policeman Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 I think, it's ventilation tank or canister EVAP problem. P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak)
8.1HD/ALLISON Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Probably have an evap vent valve stuck closed.
txab Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Probably have an evap vent valve stuck closed. +1
mas0324 Posted September 22, 2011 Author Posted September 22, 2011 I have almost 300,000 km on the truck. First time with this problem. I am really interested in what the orange valve at the tank inlet is supposed to do. It was closed when I dropped the tank. Should it be open (retracted) or is the fuel supposed to push it back as it fills?
8.1HD/ALLISON Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 That is probably the rollover protection valve. Keeps fuel from leaking in a rollover.
mas0324 Posted September 22, 2011 Author Posted September 22, 2011 okay. That would make sense. A safety valve. I think that the valve may be sticking. The noise I hear is the gurgling like when the tank is full and you are topping off but it is not full. What would be the best way to get it unsticky???????
mas0324 Posted October 17, 2011 Author Posted October 17, 2011 To close this off. I filled the tank and drove over some rough stuff. Shook it up pretty good. All is fine now. Must have been some varnish or something that got out of place. Who knows but it is working now.
