Vortec Max 6.0 No Muffler?

Hey all, so I currently have a custom dual exhaust all 3" from the cat back with a magnaflow muffler. I was thinking about pulling the muffler and replacing with a y-pipe but I want to know if it's going to be ridiculously loud? Any problems with back pressure, etc?

I had a y pipe and dual outs on my old 4.8L, I never had any problems with back pressure. You will lose and unnoticed amount of torque. From what the grape vine has told me..... You don't have to worry about not having enough back pressure or that it will burn up your exhaust valves. that was only harmful to the old engines back in the day when they had leaded fuel and needed to actually coat the valve seats. I have yet to have seen a person who has done engine damage from no back pressure. The cat systems, exhaust restrictions on today's vehicles should be plenty. I am not a mechanic but do some searching. And I am running cut outs on my new 5.3 and have no troubles.

The 6.0 is a different animal than the 5.3 and the 4.8. It will be ridiculously loud and drone like a mother in the cab.

Haha redneck loud isn't what I'm going for. I had a flowmaster super 40 on my 4.0 straight 6 Jeep and that was very very loud. I just want something to showcase the awesomeness which is the vortex Max

I am running a e cut out just before the muffler. Loud when I'm on the streets, stock quiet when towing/hunting. You could also add to your current set up to make it louder

How long have you been running that cutout? Ive heard that they wear out over time and begin to leak and rattle.

I run a 10 series Flowmaster muffler. It is pretty darn loud but DOES NOT sound redneck, just sounds like a muscle car. If you do not like drone than this is not your muffler though.

anything but a FM 40, after a year the inner welds rusted and pieces rattled on my buddy's, now that sounds like redneck crap. decently happy with my Mag, which is alright especially considering it's not the right one for my truck. you could try a y with long cherry bombs, they're pretty mellow and they actually seem to have less drone than the Magnaflow

i haven't been running it long, but i am not running a butterfly valve like the typical electric cut outs. this cutout is more bulky and is an actual plate that slides and completely blocks off flow. The only thing I see on these that could fail is the electric motor. as far as leaks go there is no seal to wear out. I have a thread somewhere in this forum on it.

I just got different exhaust installed on my truck this week. I replaced the muffler and resonator with a y-pipe and 2.5" dual tails, and no muffler. I love the way it sounds. It's only crazy-loud when you floor it. At cruising speed, there is NO drone...the only sound you hear is what's coming out of the tail pipes. I had a custom shop do it for me, and both of us did a lot of research before deciding what to run, because I've heard horror stories about resonance and drone with the L76 engines.

A few things we did that helped kill the drone are....

1. Kept the 3rd cat (thats something new for '09 though, and helps quiet it down some)

2. Ran 2.5" pipe, instead of 2.25" (the larger pipe changes the speed at which the exhaust sprials down the tube, which makes for a deeper tone and less noise. It also doesn't back feed when you let off the gas.)

3. Ran single 3" pipe back as far as possible before the Y (every time the exhaust changes direction, it will create drone, so we moved the Y back as far as we could)

4. Ran the duals with as few bends as possible (fewer sharp bends will create less noise)

5. Slipped 3" pipe over the 2.5" at the exit (basically created fake tips by slash cutting them...but also changes the sound)

The result is a very deep, clean sound during idle and light acceleration...very healthy sound during heavy acceleration...and NO drone or resonance while crusing.
