I had a 2006 F150 XLT XTR, great truck, I'd buy another Ford for sure.

 

I really want a 2500HD though.

1996 dodge 2500 diesel, nice truck,great mileage,loud,ate front end parts

2003 ford 6.0 ps very nice truck , good mileage , lotta balls towing, king pins every two years

2011 chevy 2500 ccsb 6.0 gas , most comfortable truck i have had,love all the features, mileage is what i expected, dont miss 16 qt. oil changes,$85 air filters, $70 fuel filters, $45 oil filters and paying .50 more per gallon to fill up.

something else i keep juggling in my head is IFS vs solid front end....i'm going to a 2500 next and looking at things online and such, IFS is the biggest weakness to GM's HDs...i love my bowties, but i want a truck that i don't have to worry about needing front end parts every year....its just something i've been considering, as of now though i've been priceing out an HD lol

I've rarely heard of any of the 900s, HD or otherwise being common for front end stuff.

my dad had a 2000 1500 excab dodge ram that he got after he had to file the lemon law on his 97 chevy. the only problem he had with it was gas milage. the computer was never even close to what the actual number was. So after it was almost paid off he traded it in for an 03 Youkon KL. thats now my moms truck and she loves it. I had a 78 ford F-150 Ranger Explorer that i drove for a few months till i joined the military. It was a good fixer upper and even though it has 240k miles on it got me where i needed and more. The military has an assortment of different trucks that we get to drive now and then and we beat the hell out of them. But ill always love my chevy's.

Had a 2005 hemi ram before my Sierra, good truck only had to have the power steering lines replaced under recall other than that no problems. I drive my shops f-250 6.0 power stroke all the time...and don't like it. Rides like a log wagon, and we seem to have to do a lot of little fixes and some big ones, erg cooler oil cooler and egr valve comes to mind. In all fairness though it does have 130,000 on it...that's a lot for a diesel right : rolls eyes:

I've had Ford and Dodge before. I was very happy with the F150's (98 4x4 extra cab & 03 Lightning). The biggest reason I don't have one now is I don't like the F150 styling. I also had an 07 Ram crew cab 2wd. The hemi power was nice, but I had some engine oil leak issues, electrical issues, and a/c problems in the 3 years I had it before buying my Sierra. Everything was fixed under warranty accept the a/c since the warranty had just run out.

 

I'm very happy with my Sierra, it's my favorite truck I've had since my Lightning. I have no plans to go back to Ford, and I'll never own a Dodge again. I do like the new Ford super duty diesels. If I had the need to tow heavier loads, I'd buy an F250 without question. But, at $40k plus, it's too much to spend on a truck that I only drive less than 4k per year.

i had an 04 F-150 Lariat Crew Cab on 35's and I loved it. It was a great truck but the mileage and insurance were killing me so I had to get rid of it. Im on my second GMC since that Ford so now I am the blacksheep in my Ford driving family.

My first truck was a 94 for lightning, it was the coolest truck in my high school parking lot and never owed me a dime. Now I'm currently driving a 93 GMC 350 5 speed 4x4. another really great truck. Never owned a dodge, someday I'd like to buy a 1st gen 12 valve cummins, however I don't think the 5.9 v8 is at all up to par with ford and chevy.

My last truck I had was a 2002 F150 4x4 Ext cab with the 5.4L. I put 60,000 km on it over 5 years and sold it with 125,000 km. Overall it was a good truck, but I had some hickups with it. The original Ford windshield leaked, the heater box filled with snow during a storm and burned out the blower fan, front brake callipers continually wore the pads on an angle, front differential fork broke, thermostatic fan clutch, alternator, block heater, thermostat, and a minor oil consumption problem that came and went occasionallly. I never had any spark plug blowouts (they are only held in the aluminum head by 3-4 threads), but I did change them myself to make sure it wouldn't happen. Other than that, it was a solid truck with a great ride and comfortable seats. Things I liked better about my Ford were better fuel mileage, more torque (350 vs 330), more comfortable seats, and a more solid build (thicker sheet metal and more "real" bumpers). Things I like better about my Silverado (besides the fancy options) are the bigger back seat, ext cab doors that fold back, locking diff, rear drum brakes, and rear fender liners. As far as reliability, this remains unknown as my Silverado has been far from stellar in it's short life.

 

When I decided to update my truck, I was set on a Tundra Limited...but it was too expensive new and used prices are rediculously high given the miles they have. Irregardless, that 5.7 is a beast!

I test drove the F150 ecoboost, but just couldn't get used to the sound...and that motor makes me nervous in terms of reliability and repair expenses. Wait a fews years and see what becomes of it. I ended up with my Silverado because it had only 4,500 km with all options...and the price was right.

 

As far as Dodge, I don't think I'd buy a Ram 1500. I had one (2010 Hemi 4x4) for work for a couple months (till the I got the 2500) and didn't like it. While I didn't have any trouble with it, the gas mileage was very poor and that Hemi is way overrated in terms of power. The coil spring rear suspension is not good for towing or hauling heavy loads, and the truck itself had an overall "cheapness"...even though it was an SLT. However, I did spend (my personal company truck) 12 months and 55,000km in a 2010 Ram 2500 4x4 with the Cummins that I liked very much. Maybe the truck itself isn't the best, but those Cummins 6.7's are bulletproof. Also had a 2008 Ram 2500 4x4 Cummins for 6 months and 40,000km that was also good. The DPF systems on the Dodge diesels are great too, no need to add horse piss!

Had a 97 ford that was very nice but got to a point where all the issues didn't warrant the cost to fix so I wanted an extended cab...not a crew cab...and dodge was out because extended cab not offered in full size and ford was out because of 60k warranty and price.

 

I have a few friends with new/newer dodges with the hemi and they get as much mileage as I do with My 5.3 and have more power. I have yet to hear anything bad about the 5.7 hemi. I had a 97 chevy extended cab with a 350/ 5 speed manual and that truck outperformed My 5.3 anyday.

 

I most likely will get rid of My 2010 chevy and go to a full size hemi dodge in a regular cab. I just don't like the way the 2010 shifts..(5.3....6 speed..Z71) and the lack of reasonable power. I'll sacrifice room for peace of mind.

 

I also didn't appreciate the dealer not honoring the "military discount". Called GM and they wouldn't do anything. And I don't want to get into a discussion about it but for anyone contemplating a new chevy....It was Heinrich Chevy in Lockport NY that wouldn't give the military discount. So I don't recommend them at all.

WOW!!!! I don't get the "tude"....... I'm a vet (VFW) and would never think to feel that a car dealership (or anyone else) "Owed" me a discount because I did my duty...... I find that a bit repugnant. Where did that come from???

 

You must have a pretty busy Christmas if you bash every business that doesn't offer a military discount..... I hope the rest of your life goes better........

this has been discussed before on this forum...most of the time the military discount isen't as good as other offers dealers have going on....so really the dealer probably gave you a better deal without the discount...

Sorry if I offended you.... I was a bit taken back by bashing a particular small business by name. Now that you say that you served for 34 years, I'm even more confused..... I was taught to be more respectful of businesses that military personnel visit. Maybe things have changed.

 

I guess that we will have to leave it at being mutually offended ....... but still friends.... I hope.
