Help With Oil Leak 09 Silverado

Hey All,

Got an Oil Leak on my 09. Started about a month ago, what you see here happens withing 4-5 days of wiping everything clean ( and these drip end up on the garage floor if not wiped off) Just wanted to get some ideas where you guys/ techs (I know there are several on this board) suspect it might be coming from.

And please before anyone says "take it to the dealer it is under warranty". YES OK, I have an appoinment at the dealer later this week, but I like trying to figure things out and bouncing ideas around.

Trucks/Engine Specs : 09 Silverado 2500HD 6.0 LY6 - 13K miles

Rear main seal if I had to venture a guess. Mine leaks a little, but not enough to ever have the oil level go down. Plus my 04 has 150k miles on it.

GM had several issues causing your problem:

1) Oil cooler line block gasket leak right above oil filter. However, by your pictures, that doesn't seem to be your problem.

2) A pourus casting of the rear engine cover between engine and trans.

3) Rear engine cover gasket leak.

4) Rear main oil seal.

If the problem is any of the last three, the dealer will probably replace the rear engine cover which fixes all those causes. The updated cover includes the rear main seal as one unit. On the original, the rear main seal was seperate. Don't be surprised if they put dye in the oil and tell you to come back in 500 miles.

Had the same on mine, but less oil. It was the oil pan gasket.

Same here, less oil and my oil pan gasket was replaced under powertrain warranty. Here is my thread http://www.gm-trucks...al&fromsearch=1

Well I too am getting the oil pan gasket replaced, that is where the tech thinks it is coming from. Have oil dye in it right now, driving it for the rest of the week and taking it in next week to confirm leak and replacement.

It looks like the entire front diff/ suspension is going to have to come off to replace this, is this correct? This is unbelievable that a truck with 13K on it needs this done. I have already had the body off the frame to take care of a body mount that was making an unbelieveable noise. Maybe the next problem will require the engine or transmission to come out, you know, just for good measure :( .

I'll update when I get it done.

I had mine in at the dealer to have a check engine lite looked at and told them about my oil leak at the bell housing vent. It turned out to be the oil cooler line they removed it seal the fitting all is well

Good luck Dave
