G80 Question

I have an '07 2500HD listed in my signature that I use mainly off road. It has 4.10's with a G80 in the rear. Is this suitable for off road or would there be a better option?

Thanks!

The G80 is a pretty good locker and im almost a 100% positive that you want need anything more than that, mine gets me through places in 2WD i have no right going

For light off-roading, it works great. If you get into more serious off-roading/rock crawling and larger tires it won't last long from what I've read. I've had one in every GM truck I've owned and never had an issue.

You've got the 14 Bolt 11.5" AMM rear axle. That thing is almost bullet proof, behind a 6.0L. You'll be fine for everything but hard core wheeling.

Your right, I was thinking of the 1500's 8.5" rear end.

One thing to think about. If your in deep mud and need wheel spin, the G80 will unlock at around 18-20 mph.

The 2500HD with 6.0L have the 10.5 14Bolt rear. From what i understand they are much more robust than the 10 bolt rears used on the 1/2 trucks(besides the V-max and 6.2L trucks, they had a semi floater 9.5 14bolt). Overall a good locking Diff and I have never had problems with mine in my old 2001 3/4ton Burban and my current 2006 2500HD gasser.

Super tough diff, only thing is they have shitty ground clearance. I say that 11.5" is tough...I've blown 2 G80's up but both were 10 bolt. Those can't take much beating. That full floater is a tough cookie tho

the options are all called a G80. so yes the locker in the 10 bolt, 9.5 semi floater 14 bolt, 10.5 FF, and 11.5 FF 14bolt are all called a G80.

I really hope the G80 in my 2500HD D-Max fairs better then the G80 in my old 99 1500 did :( $1600 is a lot for a rebuilt/replacement :(

I recently did a G80 swap in my Burb. The G80 hadn't worked since I bought it almost four rears ago.So I searched all the local pick-a-part yards until I found one(took almost six months). It was in a '92 K2500 Burb with 268,000 miles on it.The only reason I took a chance on it was the cheap cost....$38.00.Luckily for me it works great  The oil from the '92's diff looked clean & the magnet had no shavings on it.So they WILL last with proper maintinence.
